A Walk With a Prime...

When I first started in photography 90% of all the images I took were with a prime lens. Now it seems that most of us are using zooms of various lengths nearly all the time. When I bought my first used SLR back in 1968 it came with a 50mm lens and 105mm. I took thousands of pictures with those two lenses and never dreamed of the versatility and quality of todays zooms. I still enjoy taking off on a walk with my camera and one prime lens. I did that late this afternoon after work. I attached the 105 without any tubes that I usually have with it and took off down the street. Here are a few of the shots I got. How about you, have you got some interesting prime lens shots to share?

I've found in the last year that even with having to manually focus with the d60 that the 50mm is my favorite thus far. I have my 18-200mm on there normally but if I want that super crisp main image with a beautiful soft touch around everything else I'll grab my 50. Your guys' examples speak for themselves =) Lovely images!

I have a 200mm manual focus that was a real work horse for me in the film days. It's a great focal length in full frame format. Nice set of images here I like the portraits good crops with out having to get right in their face with the 200.

I remember when you got that 50mm and weren't sure if you would ever get use to focusing it. From the look of your resent stuff you got it down pat. Post a few of your 50mm shots for us.

Where is this? It looks just like the Jura in France. I know a place which is very similar. Might post a few pictures soon.

OT you inspired me to take a walk today! I was terrifies for the first few months at the thought of having to manual focus everything and it's especially tricky with self portraits! I've used the dog about a million times as my marker. I put him where I want to be, tell him to "waaaaaaait", focus and then rush over to reward him and get into place. When my eyes give out I'll have to upgrade to the d300 I think!!

This one is from the 365 and was a tribute to my cousin's death. Such a sweet guy and died super young.

And a couple from today's walk. We don't really have the foliage here in Norcal unless I make more of a drive. But I did find this one type of tree (totally not my area of expertise) that had these cute little leaves that changed all sorts of colors! The only problem was they were so well maintained and trimmed I was too short to get very close! *sigh And sorry about the blinding sun, I have an addiction to looking straight at it!! :aureola:

After seeing those bridge shots, I think I finally have to drive out to our 100 year old bridge and shoot some black and white.

Love what you are doing with that heavy back lighting. Most of the time photographers will back away form lighting like that but you made it an asset to you images. Now I have to go out and about with just the 50mm and see what I can come back with. Nice work.

Until I can get out with the 50mm here are a few more with the 105 from the other day.

Agreed! I always have at least one of my 2 50mm with me wherever I take my dSLR.
