Sticky: Lunar Eclipse
Dear All,
Hope everyone is well and ready for the lunar eclipse tomorrow :D . Post your pictures of the eclipse as soon as you can, and perhaps your horror stories of the night in question. Take a good warm coat, a hot drink of your choice (tea for me as always :D :p ), and your camera (of course :p  !).
Good hunting,

Sticky: Lunar Eclipse
Tonight is the night, and boy is it going to be good! :D It is clear right now in Colorado Springs and it is looking even better for tonight. Maybe some patchy clouds, but nothing major. Hope the weather is great everywhere else! Good luck on the photos.

Re: Sticky: Lunar Eclipse
We are actualy expecting rain. Rain in AZ! Pretty darn cloudy at the moment and only about 40-50 min till moon rise/sunset

Anyone in CA catch it?? :(
I HAD TO WORK!
I caught just the beginning of the shadow at about 6:45 this evening, on my way into work.
I am dying to see some shots.
Hubby was sick and didn't catch much on the cam.

We had great clear weather! It was a beautiful eclipse. To bad my equipment just isn't suited to it. :(

Ditto! The skies here were clear, beautiful view behind my house of the eclipse.
My 70-200+1.4x + 2x extenders didn't do very well, so my son and I just enjoyed the view with binoculars. One of these days I'll splurge and order the attachments for my camera to attach it to my son's telescope, hopefully before the next full eclipse in 2007.

Well if nobody's going to post photos yet, here are mine! ;)
They're not the best and not the worst. This first one is your standard "oh my gosh what's happening to the moon?" shot. The second one, I decided I had taken enough of those and wanted to try something different.
Enjoy!

I like the effect of that second one, Greg!
OK, here's mine. I'm so glad I did all that experimenting last summer...I grabbed a few shots and was satisfied I had something decent without even really "chimping" my pictures.
Only trouble is, by the time I got home, this is all that was left of the eclipse...

Re: Sticky: Lunar Eclipse
Oh yeah, forgot the story.
Spent the whole night at the theatre (pickup rehearsal), it was past 11 pm when I finally got out, looked up and saw just a sliver of the moon as the eclipse was just sliding past peak. Talked with two people in the parking lot for awhile, drove 20 minutes home, came inside for my camera --- dead battery.
Found another battery, set up tripod, preset camera before mounting on tripod, set whole thing up outside, had a hard time pointing tripod straight up (little handle thingy got in the way of the legs), finally got it pointed at the moon.
Set self timer, cat come out and rubs on the legs of the tripod. I shoo cat away, she doesn't listen, thinks I'm giving her much-wanted attention. Push shutter release, step away and lure cat to the side, pet cat while timer ticks down and *CLICK*. Go back to camera, bracket, pet cat, repeat. After about 7 shots, I deemed myself finished.
It was rainy and cloudy all day, so nobody thought we'd get a good view. Surprisingly it was clear, although there was low fog and a very thin layer of upper-level humidity visible, but the camera cut through it. VERY pleasant temperatures. Didn't need a coat, my sweatshirt sufficed just fine.

OK, I'll post one of my eclipse shots too.
Not great, not bad, not really anything, just a snapshot.

Very clear and sharp. What gear did you use?

Re: Sticky: Lunar Eclipse
Didn't really plan to shoot it but I was home (middle of the city so it takes a drive to get away from the lights) and saw a white and orange blob thru the haze. Kind of different, wish I would have shot it now... Oh well.

My shots are nothing special, but I do have the first half so i thought i would share. I put them in this form last night so my mom could have them, hence the bar on the bottom (she wanted to show her 7th graders). At work I don't have photoshop so i scaled with a sketchy program on my unix machine....if nothing shows up im sorry :-)
I can't wait to see the shots from people who have telescopes.

Re: Sticky: Lunar Eclipse
Did you really just say "chimping"?
Did Popular Photography coin that phrase? Just curious. I hadn't seen it anywhere until I got the latest issue a few days ago.

Re: Sticky: Lunar Eclipse
Greg, I heard it from a friend of mine who has been doing professional photography for a looooong time, specializing in Equine Photography. Apparently there's a big community of Equine Photographers out there, and among them as they discussed the transition to digital they talked about "chimping" too much. I first heard it from her a couple months ago.
Speed, I used my DRebel on a tripod, with my 75-300 IS USM lens, but with IS turned OFF.

Re: Sticky: Lunar Eclipse
Dear All,
The conditions Wednesday were somewhat difficult here in Colorado Springs. There seemed to be perpetual high, patchy clouds which made pictures difficult. But, it was either work through the clouds when they parted or give up :( . Well, I was not about to miss something as good as this if the next one is going to be in '07  . So I went out with my mom and dad and we took what photos we could. My dad took some photos of our set up. I am the one peering intently through the camera on the right  . More photos to come hopefully! :D
