Question Some VT While Doing PT...

So I was doing my daily PT, that's "Physical Training", you know excercise, for those of you aren't in the Army. And while I was excercising my body, I happened to do some "VT" as well. "VT" being "visual training".
It mostly occured while I was running, but I did see a potential portrait while I was doing some weight training too.
So I ask you, when do you practice seeing?

Re: Some VT While Doing PT...

I walk around with a virtual viewfinder in front of my eye at all times.

I should probably be more careful, but I enjoy watching how the light and shadows change, on something of interest, as I pass by in my car. I end up wanting to go back and stand in the middle of the street to get a shot I saw from my car. I don't do it, but I've been tempted at times. I get lots of portrait ideas at work, because I'm around a large and diverse group of people.

I seem to see the most when I'm not in a position to do anything about it. It's kind of frustrating actually.

Sorry, Brian. Had to do my Drill Sergeant impersonation, heh heh...

That's a good question you ask. I do my best general thinking when I swim laps. But I'm most inspired with photography ideas when I drive.

I am constantly looking at everything around me as I drive, from man-made structures to natural settings. I note the ambient and artificial lighting, and make mental (or written) notes on how accessable places are for bringing in equipment, and whether locations are on private or public property.

I am imagining shots in my head at various locations everywhere I go. Everything from commercial fashion and portrait to shooting spots for my art projects.

Things have been kind of intense lately as I'm in the middle of shooting my group of "industrial" images for my upcoming show (see Art Forum). Needless to say, my neck is on a swivel, and I've been paying extra attention to my driving because I'm trying to do so may things at once. Seems like practically every red light I stop at I'm scratching furiously in a note pad... ;)

Oh, and Paul, I've finally started forcing myself to do what you mention. I make it a point now to stop and get out of my car from time to time to scout locations more thoroughly and take some snaps to bring home to look at and save as visual references.

Basically what I do is what a location scout does for a living, except I'm simply doing it for myself...

I hear you there Paul, there are a lot of photographs that I see in my 'virtual viewfinder", great term by the way, that often don't become photographs. But it is a good practice to be in!

    Brian,

Pretty much like others have said; whenever I can. Whether it be in class, out my window, etc.

Whenever I can, I wish I could have my camera on me.

    LOL Steve!
    That doesn't quite count though..
Believe it or not, I have been in the military, all National Guard, for some 18 years now.
It is starting to be too much to deal with, but I will hang in there for two more years or so..
It has been good to me, it has, and will hopefully again, paid for school.

Re: Some VT While Doing PT...

I find myself "framing" scenes many times - when I'm driving, walking. When I first got my DSLR, I almost drove myself crazy, as I was looking at EVERYTHING through the compositional frame in my mind! When I was on vacation I had to make myself stop it so I wouldn't miss the fun!
