    Lightbulb Short Notice Project: Moonlight

We have a full moon tonight and tomorrow (I guess). This should be interesting photography.

Let's go outside and do some slow exposure photography by moon light. It can be of anything but stick to moon light and slow shutters. It can be of the moon it self.

    Some tips:
    Tripod
    Timer
Flash light to assist manual focus before shooting
    AEB
(feel free to add more tips)

I hope we get a good turn out.

Inspired by these two threads and mention of our full moon tonight:

    Moonshot!

I'm a bit confused because news radio mentioned a full moon tonight but online moon calendars say it's on Feb 2nd. Either way, the moon should be bright and big in the next 48 hours.

    Re: Short Notice Project: Moonlight

    Hey Eric,

How bazaar, I just looked up and noticed the full moon was tonight and decided to go out and shoot it Between this and the travel forum idea, we have been on the same page recently!

The reason the full moon appears on 2 different days is because the "technical" time that the moon is full usually occurs in the morning, after midnight, therefore placing the full moon on the 2nd.

One thing to remember if anyone goes out tonight: the full moon will rise around sunset. So, if you're out with camera and wanting to see the moon rise, look with your back to the setting sun and you'll see it coming up. It may be a little before or after sunset, but it will be right around that time.

Also, as I said in the other thread, once the moon comes up and is more directly overhead, you'll want to shoot at f4, 15 minutes at iso 100, or around there. That will give you the "daylight" look exposed by the full moon.

I will be watching weather conditions here, they are calling for clouds all day though. The rest of you guys have fun

    Cool I'm a bit confused...

"because news radio mentioned a full moon tonight but online moon calendars say it's on Feb 2nd."

The moment of full moon occurs at 12:45 Eastern Standard Time. So it is essentially full tonight, but doesn't officially occur until tommorrow.

    Now you know.

I'd love to participate, but we have a solid overcast here, and it has rained all day...and is still raining.

After discussing it, I'm looking forward to trying it again myself. I'll pass on this one - it's gonna be cold!

    Re: Short Notice Project: Moonlight

The clouds stayed in the east this evening as the moon came up. So I wasn't able to see it rise, but when it broke over the clouds a couple hours later, I took a few miserable shots with the point and shoot digi. My little camera has no manual mode so I wasn't able to even get a proper exposure of the moon Ah, the limitations of auto-everything

Clouds cover and light snow lifter here late afternoon and cleared up as the sun went down, I missed the shot I was thinking of at rise near the horizon, :mad2: maybe tomorrow if I'm paying attention. Got a couple others before I was finally driven in by the single digit temps and -20 windchill. Have to bring warmer gloves next time.

I just got the adapter for my new tripod head, so I will have to try and give this a shot in the next few nights. Unfortunately it is raining tonight, so I am gonna take a raincheck on that...literally...

Here is my moonshot in the meantime...

    Project: Moonlight

Nice shots! Glad the project inspired some photography on a Thursday night. Weather.com told me I would have a clear night sky but that didn't happen until close to 10PM. I had to throw on warmer clothes.

These shots were take at 20 to 30 seconds each at various f/stops. I was using my Canon 30D and my Canon 85mm f/1.8 EF USM Lens.

I didn't throw my zoom on for some real close moon shots since my -ahem- were freezing. I wanted to use Almo's specs. Maybe this weekend.

Hope more shots get posted (when the weather clears for you) and maybe we'll inspire others to give it a try??? Hey Jurgen, does the moon look the same in Australia?

    Thanks for playing

Wink My little camera has no manual mode

That's why I like the Coolpix 5700. It has manual mode.

I have yet to see a camera, P&S, SLR, or DSLR, that will meter the moon correctly. The sensor "see's" all that black and over-exposes. IF you have a long enough lens, and IF your spot meter is small enough, you could meter off the moon. My F5 will do it - when it's connected to my Celestron C-8. But it's so much easier to go to manual mode, and start with the "Sunny f16" rule and adjust from there.

Not until I read all the advice here including most recently Almo's thread did I learn to take a picture of the moon. My own efforts included long exposures and white blobs. THANKS FOR THE TIPS EVERYONE

Like that shot Jimmy. I thinks it's a trip when I see the moon to the east and the sun setting in the west all in one sky.
