    Light streaks try 2

So my Son was out riding in the front yard , with a Helmet light on. so I had some new tricks I wanted to play with this time , having learned from my last time. this time I cut down the exposure time , and I also Took a strobe unit that I fired By hand. took some experimenting. the red and blue light is on the valve stem of his rear wheel.

Exposure was still too long here, made a ghost out of my Son

Still too long and the background light while not rally noticable when I set up 10 seconds of exposure it is more then enoguh to effect things

But I like the ghosting effect.

changed my Point of view to remove as much background light as I could

this one I gave it a little longer exposure time so it would allow me enough time to get in close with the hand strobe , I like how it came out.

    and last no hand strobe.

I do think your next to last shot did work the best.
Can you do even less time so his head lamp isn't so bright.
I suppose that would increase the ghosting effect though.

Very cool! If you try it again sometime, try out a soft flash set on rear curtain sync. That should get you a good sharp shot of your son with the light trails behind him.
    Great experimenting!

Less time , will just mean shorter light trail , not dimmer

oh you're right, sorry. Were you at 1/1? I have no experience with this type of shot, but it seems to me like at the proper power setting your son can come back from the afterlife.

I would set your flash to some where around 1/8-1/16 power if you can.
I like the last shot the best.

exaclty , it was more important to get close than to have more power. more power from distance lit everything up , when i only want my son lit up.

and it was the first time I had ever tried something like this. It was really a lot of fun! for both me and my son.

also if you look close you will see the top ofthe ramps there are 2 lights , we had to put LED markers up there ( and there are 2 at the bottom of the entry ramp ) so he could see the ramp on his appraoch. he crashed on his first attempt with out the marker lights.

    Hi:

I really don't have any experience with this type of shot but it is a cool effect.

    Re: Light streaks try 2

I'm glad you tried this! Very nice result in the next to last photo! As for the "ghost" effect, since he is moving you are going to have this problem on long exposures (since he isn't there to block the light behind him). There are only 2 ways around it. The easiest is to stop the aperture down a little more to under expose the background, while adjusting the flash to normal exposure. You will still have some effect, but it will be less noticeable unless there is light right behind him. The second way is to take two photos. One for the flash exposure, which can be at any shutter speed you want, but faster is better; and a second exposure for the background and light streaks. Then layer the two photos and you have a perfectly lit rider on top of a perfectly lit background, with no ghost effect!

Camera on tripod, set up a three to five second exposure with flash set with rear curtain sync. Start the shutter before your son hits the ramp and so exposure will end as he is near the end of the frame. The flash will freeze him nicely with the light trails behind him. Worth a go.

Interesting, looks like a lot of fun

I like the one before the last, where your son is more clear
