a sad day, and a happy day...

my 20d bit the dust. Mid ceremony at my brothers wedding on Saturday. Fortunately, I had my 10d in my bag as well, but I'm so not used to using it.

A sad sad day....

On the other hand, I have a new sister in law.

ps...I'm not sure what happened on my laptop, but they look better when I process on the other computer.

Wow, that's kinda scary. You mean to tell me they don't last forever? :D

I guess a back up is always a good idea. I wonder what the average life of a DSLR is. I'm sure it depends on several factors, amount of use, care taken during use and storage. How long did you have your camera, Adina?

I've been using my 20d for about 3 yrs, I think. I bought it as soon as it was released, well, okay, dh brought it home within the first week. I've rolled the numbers over two or three times.

I was un-officially official. They asked would I do it, but said whatever I got they would be thrilled with, as there were no other options. Did some family shots, the ceremony, a little at the reception, then put the camera in the car.

Not sure what the replacement will be. I've got a play I'm doing next Wednesday, so I'll have to pick up it before Monday.

Kudos for having a backup - Murphy's Law and everything...

My condolences for the 20D, but aren't the functions very similar to the 10D?
And YES, good job You had the 10D handy.
BTW, Won't the 10D work just fine for the play? It's still a very highly rated camera, and should be just as good now as when You bought it. Speaking of which, (doing quick math from when You got the 20D) the 10D probably has a very low count on the number of actuations? :p

Very similar, but subtle difference on things that I use frequently. My biggest one is the focus points. The 20d has more, and I switch them frequently.

The 10d should work fine for the play, in fact, I've used it for dance recitals (very similar). It does have a low count, and I'm going to be using it for the next month or so. I had it for about 2-3 months before I got the 20d, but have used it in between as well. I do need two, thou, so I have to pick up something.

Looking at the 5d or the 40d. Going to do more research tomorrow.

The 40D is quite new and its image quality is quite nice. The 5D has great image quality but it's the oldest in the current Canon lineup and is liable to be replaced any day now. On the other hand, the price is quite attractive. Only you can decide, but given that you've been shooting 1.6x bodies for some time now, it may not be worth switching to a FF body and figuring out what lenses will work best for you all over again.
