For some of us old farts the percussion section is the weekly rattling of the meds as we sort out our next weeks existance. I often enjoy the random patterns they make before closing them up. This week I went and grabbed the camera first.

What are the metronomes in your life?

And if I may quote the Rolling Stones; "What a drag, it is, getting old!"

BUT... it beats the alternative!

I'm on Aciphex for my acid reflux, and Flonase for my seasonal allergies.

Now, I take a multivitamin everyday, along with Ginseng, Gingko Biloba, and Saw Palmetto, but those are all optional.

This may rapidly become an old geezer post! I can hear the twenty-somethings complaining already...

Yeah, and they'd have a point. I had intended it more as "what are the routines in your life that you usually ignore photographically but maybe shouldn't" sort of thing.

I guess they'll have to put up with us old farts nattering on and never saying what we mean too. :)

Now, now...
Some of us "youngsters" have problems, too. You want a list of ailments? I bet you don't, but here it is anyway. :p And keep in mind, I'm a poor boy- health insurance is a dream I hope one day will come true.
Both shoulders: torn rotator cuffs, right shoulder is so bad I can't sleep on it. Right knee: brace worn daily for 6 months now, pain keeps me awake some nights. Right wrist: carpal tunnel. Sternum: car accident separated it, never fully healed. Back: multiple car accidents/whiplash-- do the math. All joints: snap, crackle, pop all morning, every morning. Insomnia: no sleep 'till midnight or later most nights, can't stay asleep, so I wake up between 2:00 and 4.30 every day, and then I'm wide awake. I get migraines randomly- the real ones that end my day if they happen.. you want real pain, try a migraine- like getting creamed in the head with a baseball bat constantly for hours and hours.... Painful cavities that three daily brushings don't help... so much for flouride....
But don't get me wrong- all this crap doesn't slow me down. I just ignore the pain and keep going. I couldn't stand being stuck at home 'cause it all hurts too much- I'd go crazy. So I stay just as active as anyone else. You learn to live with constant pain and fatigue. It just takes a little more effort than some people are willing to put forth. But to me it's important to not let little things like a knee that feels like it's full of broken glass slow me down. I'll rest when I'm dead! :D

Yes, I'm afraid we got sidetracked quickly. Sorry about that. I guess it's a geezer trait. ;-)

Here is a snap shot of a day in my life. One meeting after another.

Health department meetings, environmental health meetings, on-site meetings, program specialist meetings, bio-terrorism meetings, EPI meetings, communication meetings and the list goes on. Some days I feel like I spend my life in meetings. :-O

No matter how many pills end up in that box, or chest, or trunk for that matter, keep your spirits, keep your sense of humor, and try your hardest to keep doing what you love.
Once you loose that the decline is rapid, painful and sad.

That's a good idea Nat. I'm going to take a week off starting tomorrow for a dose of my own heart medicine - riding crooked roads in Arkansas with friends from all over the US, Canada, and Mexico. See you when I get back.

Outdoorsman -- you mentioned migraines. This is the main reason for my daily medicine. I have to say, that if one has not experience migraines, one has absolutely no idea how excruciating it can be. This is not a headache. This is your skull crushing in. It's a sharp needle being poked slowley through your eye. The dizzyness, the inability to breathe correctly, the profuse sweating, the vomitting. It's not a headache.

A year or so ago, I ended up in the hospital for four days because my migraine caused me to lose my ability to speak. I mean, I'd try to say the words, but garble would come out. I could think them, but I couldn't formulate them. How much of a freak did I feel like trying to say to my wife: "No...Can...Can't...Speak...Doctor..." Imagine her panick.

Now I know what it must feel like to be in a coma, or have brain damage that affects your speech, but not your ability to process. It was the most frustrating and frightening thing I ever went through.

Then there are the strange looks when you tell your boss that you can't go on for the day because you have a migraine

OK. That's my medical gripe for the year!

I will try to remember this weekend(can't take the image myself) to have Michelle blast my shampoo mohawk.

BTW...I haven't really made one in years, but I used to EVERYDAY when I WAS a kid( still act the part)

my life is VERY MUNDANE....... wake up, drive to work, work, drive home, get cumfy, surf, sleep, surf, go out, surf, sleep, bathroom, sleep..... all over again ;)

Try spending every weekend waiting for the big bad wolf in the form of one hurricane or another to come and blow your house down.

Oh well. At least I don't have to deal with snow. When it stops blowing, I can always drop the boat in the water and go fishing or drag some lobsters up to throw on the barbeque.

You don't play around, do you?!!!

That is the GOOD STUFF!

Hmmm, now you're wondering how I know? Because as I've gotten older, I've slowed down. Recharge time takes longer. And the wife likes seconds every now and then. So I got some samples. My observations.

Levitra works. Does exactly what it says it does. I'd have to give it a 10.

Viagra works like it's on steroids! It's an 11 on a ten point scale.

Cialis is works like Viagra that's been turbo charged. It rates a 12!

Now, here's a little secret for you. Ginseng and Gingko Biloba. I started taking those one week ago, and I may never take another prescription pill again! I still have some of the samples left, and I don't anticipate ever needing to take them. Trust me, this stuff works!

Bike, Blues & BBQ?
Hey Chunk, I'm curious if you're headed to BB&BBQ? I know it's going to be here in Fayetteville this week. Supposed to have upwards of 250,000 bikers descend on us this weekend. The discovery channel will be filming a segment of Biker Build-off during the festivities also.

I'm hoping to be able to make it down to the main drag to get lots of photos!

Dude...You're old!
:p
Fortunately, I must live a charmed life. Multi-vitamins and the occasional Tylenol are all I need for now. Although I'm not a youngster any longer, I can identify with shoulder and back problems, my aches and pains are tolerable without meds.

To paraphrase Cheech and Chong: "I don' need no stinkin' enhancements!"

Here in Alberta, my friends and I have been talking about poor Florida, and how good we have it here, natural disaster-wise! Sure, shoveling is hard work and snow is bad for the commute to work, but it is great for sledding, downhill and cross country skiing, making snow men, pretty puictures....

Regarding taking natural supplements, if they work for you, great. They did NOTHING for me. I've taken ginseng and ginko for years. I was also taking massive amounts of Maca (also known as horney goat weed) and that did nothing. I'm late to work, early getting home and haven't read the newspaper in God knows when.

Never say never
Hey Gene! Yah, I've been lucky so far. I've only had a couple of broken bones, a little bit of back trouble, avoiding jaw surgery with some ortho work. I'm only 40 but I know lots of people my age that look, and act, a lot older! I guess part of it's genes, part of it's been having to stay in shape because I'm still in the military and a lot of luck!

Like you, I try to "never say never". Every time I do it seems to come back to haunt me! I figure a guy's got to do what a guy's got to do. But Speed brought his problems on himself by marrying a Young Hottie! Practically stole her from her high school graduation! No mercy for him!. :)

Only users lose drugs.
I am scot-free, for the moment :D I haven't really taken much of anything (read: anything) since I was in high school - I never smoked pot, no alcohol for the past 7 (!) years... and I've only taken one pain pill for the last several years on the ocassion I threw my back out lifting something heavy in the morning (cold muscles tear easily) No aspirin, no tylenol, no cough medicine, no nothing.

Sugar, Sex, and Sunshine... my drugs of choice :D

I'm not rubbing it in for anybody. I've known, loved and worked for people who have had chronic pain (I've worked in a nursing home as a massage therapist and done attendant care for a quadraplege.) But I decided long ago to battle sickness and pain with my mind, and I have been exceptionally sucessful over the years. Like I say, I've taken one pain pill once in the last 10 or so years. Of course not everybody is on a path where they can survive without meds. Yet I do know how powerful the mind is and how it can create or heal many of the illnesses we have - or imagine we have - when properly trained to do so. That, and the human body's ability to heal itself even from cancers has proven inspirational to me time and time again. I'd like to collect as many stories as I can about people who have been healed without traditional medicines and post it so that others may have hope :) I truly feel that with proper mental exercises people really could live "pain free."

Again, I by no means wish to belittle anybody's pain. I know pain (and I'm talking inner pain here, too, people) well enough that I dare not taunt it. But... I dunno, just food for thought I suppose.

Deepak Chopra has done some interesting research with age, illness, and the effect your mindset and attitude have on both those things. You may be surprised by what you can do for you :)

Just food for thought. Every-body live well!

No health insurance...
Me too!

I've got a chronically crappy back, my left ankle has some sort of weird tear/spur combination going on, making it difficult to keep a steady running program. Vicious circle - no running, I put on weight, bothers my back, I have pain. Run to take off the weight, ankle starts bothering me again, I stop running, gain weight... back starts hurting. Oy. I fractured 3 fingers a year and a half ago in a mishap in the ring, and strained a few ligaments, but no health insurance = home treatment. Middle finger on left head still gets stiff and sore after punching. But at least I have no prescriptions! :)
