    Van Camera

Back in the 70s or 80s, some guy made a pinhole camera out of a van and traveled around the country taking pictures with it. That was more than just a camera, it was a whole conceptual art project. I always liked that idea.

How's your photography history? Did you know that one of the predecessors to what we now know as the camera was called the camera obscura ? Basically, it was a pinhole camera that projected onto the wall of a room. During the Renaissance, painters used it as a tool to help them paint more realistic scenes. Like photography would later, the camera obscura changed painting and people's understanding of the world around them. I don't believe that real perspective was an element of painting before the camera obscura. It was tracing the projections that taught artists about perspective.

There is an artist whose work I saw in ICP last year. He creates huge images turning a room into a big camera. The images are fascinating, because part of the actual room shows up with the outside world superimposed on top. I sure wish I could remember his name right now! Argh!
