RePost: new thread B/W+skin=being artistic

I had posted this in Critique a while back trying to get advice on cropping and whtehr it really had nay impact as a whole.....and with all the nude, nekkid, naked, nuddie butt
talk I thought I would open up the subject of artistic "nudes"...

Challenge: post body abstracts that contain skin and are in BW

...if we can exclude nipples and general genetalia( I know killjoy) it would allow other members that have expressed a general discomfort with that to view this thread

Remember ---artistic---some kinda skin---BW....Have fun. :D

Well, OK, I've got something g-rated. I took this a couple weeks ago intending to use it as a "self-portrait" :p but I wasn't completely happy with it. It might work better here in B&W....

I'm not sure how "artistic" it is, although I did a lot with hues and saturation and contrast before I converted it. I loved how it looked with green against magenta. :cool:

But here it is ... errr, here I am ... in all my naked glory:


(oh, ps. getting this shot was lots of fun. :rolleyes: I had to actually balance the camera on my nose, cheek and chin and use the self-timer as I held my breath and prayed it wouldn't fall off my face for the ten seconds of the timer. Plus, I couldn't look through the viewfinder so I had to use my best guess as to placement of my hands. After about 15 shots I got real good at it. :) )

I took a bunch of "nudes" just for you!! No nipples or genetalia to be found here, I swear (though it may appear so :p )

Nat...that's a very nice 'bodyscape' you've posted. Many old-timers here know that I did mostly glamour/nude work awhile back, so I'll have to dig through my files and post some under your criteria. Though I enjoy photographing nudes, I've always maintained that the graphic imagery seen so much on the Internet is not at all erotic or sexy, as erotica is in the imagination of the viewer, in my opinion. Your image is artsy, plus erotic.

I'd love to see some of your stuff in here! I'd bet you've got some good abstracts lying around somewhere.

Funny you should bring it up - I was attempting (unsuccesfully) to explain to someone recently the difference between "porn" and "erotica." To me there's a world of difference between the 2. I think most people tend to clump "nudity" and "sexuality" into "porn" but I believe there is a lot of beautiful eroticism out there that is tastefully done and appeals to our natural sense of sexuality without being sexist, exploitative, or just "gross." I wonder what other members have to say about this...

sorry about the criteria...I actually put it into place to get people to be creative without being blatantly graphic...not that you would be the sort of person to just post of pic of your "stuff"

One of the shots that appealed to me in your gallery...was the erotic abstracts 4 in your gallery.

I guess with everything there is a fine line with it being tasteful...and there is a fine line with how you process the imagery.I like the subtlety of some of your images.

It's funny that society has turned milk producing glands into such a huge thing. Pretty much that's the purpose of breasts and everyone gets into such an uproar when you showcase them, even in an artsy sort of way.

Playing with the Coolpix 5700 a few months back. Camera on a tripod, self-timer, indoor lights, converted to grayscale for Nat's thread.

PS: I'm a cyber rebel! ;-)

we already went thru this...although this nipple shot is much better than the original scary hamster shot....

wonder why it is that it's weird for people to look at a pic of a woman's nipples and some find it offensive but a man's niple in adfvertising is totally o.k.

the way the mind works is fascinating...

try a tighter crop of the left side (your right in the pic) so it's half your chest and your shoulder....see attached

Is that ok?

Here's a slightly tighter shot I took after the first one. Yes, it needs cropping too. I shot more than a dozen shots from different angles, different lighting directions, etc. I deleted all but these two. As I said, I was playing around, trying to learn a little about lighting angles. And the more I learn, the more I realize how much I DON'T know!

You make a good point, Nat! How come the female's glands are sexual and the male's are not? Some cultures haven't sexualized the breats at all, they're like elbows. Did some patriarch decide years ago that men needed more sexual arousal, so he decided that women should sexualize (ie hide) their breasts? And then our human sensitivities followed? (you must admit, the woman's breasts are more sensitive than most other parts of her body) I don't know, but I think it's obscure.

I say, BUCK THE SYSTEM!! If all you females were to start walking around topless, we could no longer see breasts as sexual! Yeah, that's it! All the ladys, throw offf your tops and let those things out! Let's see those bras thrown up in the face of the American system! GO GIRLS GO!!

OK, I've gotten approval to post my shot, but suddenly I'm too chicken.....

I'm not sure if this are abstract enough. But it's as close as I've come with any recent material. It is kind of quick and dirty too. Done very fast so I could show proofs to the model.

I guess I'm sorta breaking the rules but believe me, the nip is just a shadow. Have fun figuring out how I took this shot.

I took this this morning. I used sunlight for my light source. I'm hoping my neighbors didn't see the show .... ;)

And here are the results of that....

Since its supposed to be an abstract, I cropped and edited down, also desaturated.
