    Photo enlargements
    Hi guys,

I've taken some photos from travelling in South America that I'd like to get enlarged. They were shot on ISO 200 film and I was wondering how large I could get them blown up with them still looking reasonable? Also the films were developed in colour but I'd like the blow ups in black and white. Is this possible (I don't really know anything about development)? Furthermore I'd like to add a few words at the top or bottom of the border, I take it this would also be possible?

I shot them on a Canon EOS3000 using Kodak Gold 200 High Def film, if this makes any difference to how big they can be.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hello George,

While I'm no expert as this, I know first hand that 400 speed film will give you awesome 8X10's. Kodak Gold is great film, and with 200 speed, I'm sure 11X14's and possibly 12X18's should come out fine.

While theoritically, there is no limit on how big you blow them up, realistically, you will reach a point where the grain is unacceptable. Hope I've given you a ballpark idea to work with.

I agree that these sizes would be no problem. I've never really liked printing black and white from color films, it might be best to just scan the negs hi-res and then convert in photoshop and add whatever type you want. Then you can just send them out for a digital print.

I don't have as much faith.
    Hello George

I don't have as much faith in the consumer films as these guys do. I would bet 8x10 for an iso 200 film would be safe. The lens you shot with, the shutter speed you had, whether your lens was stopped down at all, and who prints it for you will all influence your ability to blow up a negative. Take it to a pro shop or at least a Ritz Camera with a Fuji Frontier (or equiv) mahine.

As to black and white, I know the Frontier can do this, and I assume the pro shops will do it though they may charge a "custom printing" charge to your order. I think Ritz would do it for free.

As to the lettering, you're out of luck unless you decide to do it yourself, ie scan the negs or prints then convert to black and white and add lettering, then send the file out to the pro lab/Ritz/whoever to have it printed.

    Hope this helps,
    Rick
