Persieds Peak This Saturday

We have had overcast skies in NC, and the forecast isn't getting any better. But for those with clear skies, the Persieds peak on Saturday, August 11th. The night before and the night after the peak also have increased numbers of meteors.

I'm bummed I'm going to be in Denver this weekend and won't be able to get out to shoot them. I may try tomorrow night just to see what I can get while I'm still up here in the high country. I shot some star trails last weekend and got a few meteors and saw one big one which was unfortunately between shots (damn it!).
I'll be looking forward to seeing what everyone else gets.

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER: The annual Perseid meteor shower is underway. International observers are reporting 15+ meteors per hour in pre-dawn skies as Earth enters a broad stream of debris from parent comet Swift-Tuttle. The shower has been building since late July. Over the past two weeks, NASA's All-Sky Meteor Network has recorded more than 57 Perseid fireballs.

The show is about to get much better. Earth will pass through the heart of the debris stream on the nights of August 11th through 13th, boosting meteor rates beyond 100 per hour. Forecasters say the best time to look is probably during the dark hours before sunrise on Sunday, August 12th.

I tried to watch last night, but it was cloudy.

Still I noticed the clouds light up occasionaly, apparently from meteor flashes, and some were even low enough to hear the explosive noise of their passge. Sounded just like the thunderstorms we get here in the summer.
