No politcal message here. It's just that I am pleased and proud to be even a small part of such a decisive moment in American history.

And yes this post is most definitely on-topic, as I now have the exciting goal of figuring out a way to get a publication to allow me to take a portrait of our new President.

Good luck with the picture, lets hope he does a good job. I voted McCain myself.

I just wonder what the forefathers are saying in their graves about a colored president?

I felt the significance inside me, tonight. It felt great to live through a turning point like this. No matter what happens from here out, race relations have forever changed in America.

Perhaps they are saying that the documents that they afixed their names to are finally bearing fruit. Also the operative word is black not colored. That is so last century

That pretty much sums it up for me.

I did not vote for Obama, however I can say that I am not disappointed that he won the election. I liked McCain better, but did not dislike Obama.
After seeing the reaction last night on the streets especially amongst the black community, I feel that the very fact that a black man (half black, actually) has been elected may be what it takes to bring this country into a new era of unity and pride in itself and in the eyes of the world.
As I was on the bus last night at about 10:00, there were a group of black passengers that were discussing Obamas win. It was apparent that they have never felt so connected with the political process as they did now, and the positive tones of their conversations and views were very encouraging to me. They were truly proud to be American. American flags were draped over cars, hanging down on balconies, being carried around through the streets by groups of teens and adults together.
If he does well, he will be in for two terms. If he does not, he will be out after his four years. Whatever the case, the country has moved into a new era and one that seems to me to have much positive tone to it.
I wish him well and will support him as my president for the next four years. I'm proud to be a part of the process and our great country.

Yes! Very well said Gary! That is the kind of optimism we need in our country.
We need to do a away with the hate and discontentment we have, not just in the USA but everywhere!
I feel the USA will be moving in much better direction over the next four and hopefully eight years.
Let's give the man a chance! After all, if you were starting a new job, isn't that what you'd want too?

Good luck getting the photo, Steve. Obama had a rally in Austin (politicians usually don't bother with Texas) during the primaries and I thought I would be able to go. I even called the organizers to ask if I could bring in a camera and they said yes. But then it filled up to quick and I couldn't get in. Doh!

Another photography related note...during all the news coverage of Obama's speech last night I was looking at cameras in the crowd and I saw a guy advancing the film in his old school manual SLR. Woohoo! Film '08!

Last night was a great moment for America. I only wish everyone could see it that way.

sounds to me like you're looking for an insult where there is none.

It was merely pointed out that there are a lot of people crying the "great victory for African Americans" in electing "A black man" to the office, and what REALLY happend is a half white half black man got elected - no mention of intelligance was mentioned, only a correction to some peoples false statements.

I left the cameras at home. Without knowing what the crowd was going to be like and how long I was going to be out there I chose to travel light and simply take it all in. Plus with the incredible coverage the event received from all the news outlets my stuff would have been a drop in a universe-sized bucket.

And honestly, it would have been a bunch of shots of the backs of people's heads and many, many, many street vendors.

History has been made!! What a great story to tell your kids or grandkids that you were there when history was made.
A door has been opened, a threshold has been crossed, and America will never be the same!!

I agree! And great post Gary! I am very anxious to see the changes we are about to incur. Slow and steady but hopefully uphill all the way!
