Not just Smart, McSmart!

Re: Not just Smart, McSmart!
LOL so they drive a Smart car but eat at McD's? Funny!
My favorite vanity plate was seen on a MINI Cooper: DIET SUV.
LOLz abound!

Re: Not just Smart, McSmart!
I agree, that is "smart" advertising. That car doesn't look like it "eats" at McDonald's! :D
BTW, I've wondered about that car. Just the other day a friend and I were wondering about the safety.
Is it meant to be driven for long distances, on highways - I mean - is it "safe?" I wouldn't want to be inside that car in any kind of accident.
Anyone around here drive or ride in one?

My wife and I wondered the same thing when we first saw them. Check this out.

Re: Not just Smart, McSmart!
the "smart" in smartwombat is because I'm a smart-driving wombat :)
also media@thesmartclub.com is my alter ego.
yes, they're safe
no, there's nothing that will save you head-on into concrete at 70mph
But for normal use, they're great.
Yes, they go on the motorway/autobahn/freeway.
Yes, you can go long distances (Oxford, UK to Frankfurt, DE)
Yes, they are economical (70mpg in a 10 year old diesel smart cdi, 90mph)
Yes, they are fast (130mph in a 7 year old roadster coupe, 55mpg)
Yes, they are safe - when I crashed my first one I opened the door and walked away
So it's more economical than your SUV
Or it's faster than your SUV (and probably more economical)
Huge amount of room inside, you wouldn't believe it from outside.
And fun!
Anyone up for a trip later this year?
I'll be driving at Spa Francorchamps circuit, Belgium, on a Rotary club charity track day.
I will have an empty passenger seat, for ride-along photographer :)

Re: Not just Smart, McSmart!
I think anyone considering such a small car is because of fuel economy,
in that case I would give the modern diesel cars a good look - hint: VW/Audi TDI
edit: just saw that smartwombat drives a DIESEL smart, now that is a frugal combination regarding fuel!
I do not think they offer diesel smarts on this side of the pond (america)

Re: Not just Smart, McSmart!
I have a cousin who's a county sheriff who has informed me that the smart cars can legally park head-in on a parallel spot.
FWIW.

AGH. The number of times I have driven past empty places on Paris streets that would take a Smart but not my C2 (3 feet longer - makes all the difference). But the Smart is only a two-seater and I sometimes have to carry the tribe around with me. Plus I need to be able to cruise all day at 80mph without feeling tired, which seems difficult in a Smart.

Liz, I should tell you that my girlfriend has a well-used coffee mug that states "Men are only good for one thing........and how important is parallel parking anyway?"
It suits her.:p

No problem!
Oxford to Frankfurt at the speed limit all the way through UK, FR, BE, NL, and then flat out on the Autobahn.
My city cabrio was remapped and would do 115mph - well that's all I could do, I think the car might have gone faster but I wouldn't unless on the racetrack
I think the new 2010 model ForTwo may be better than mine, just.
It's a couple of inches longer, and feels less twitchy in gusty wind.
But I wouldn't want to go to the grey interior, and 4-cylinder non-turbo engine.
I prefer the blue interior of my city coupe, and the 3 cylinder turbo engine.

Re: Not just Smart, McSmart!
This one could have parked sideways in this head on parking space! Very comfy and indeed spacious. I've traveled in a couple now (not this one) but I feel like I'm sitting upright in my office chair barreling down the road.
This car has some sort of corporate connection if you hadn't guessed. It may be the owner of this franchise (they have several locations) or even higher up as the corporate headquarters is only about two and half 'smart' hours north via the Interstate.
