No more Polaroid film...

Gah, just heard on the news that Polaroid is going to stop manufacturing film. Crap! Starting to panic...
I couldn't find a press release on the Polaroid site, but CNN has it:

Well, glad I didn't end up buying that Polaroid Land Camera I was looking at. This sucks though. After I was all psyched about the good film news coming from PMA and now this :( DAMN YOU DIGITAL!...LOL

The article says that Fuji also makes instant film. Do they make it for Polaroid cameras or do they have their own format? Either way, I would hit ebay tonight and buy it by the box load and store it in your freezer.

Fuji has made instant film for several years. I can't say I'm too surprised at Polaroid's announcement - but maybe a little bit. Businesses have to make money, and maybe having one producer of it instead of two will allow the one surviving company to make money on it. I don't know what formats Fuji makes, but I know they make instant film that will work with 4x5 large format cameras (not sure if it uses a Polaroid film holder or what...).

I think this is as big of an announcement as if Kodak were to stop making Tri-X (fortunately that hasn't happened, and I doubt that will happen anytime soon). It's kind of the end of an era, but how many boxes of Polaroid film have anyone here bought in the last year? Some day I'd still love to have a 4x5 field camera, but I don't think I've ever bought any of it myself.

You can use a Polaroid or Fuji 4x5 film in any Polaroid or Fuji film holder. All I have to say it sucks big time for large format uses as we are losing the B&W Negative film that was the only reason I purchased a Polaroid film holder.

Well, all is not *completely* lost - it's also said that they are looking for a buyer for the film plants. But... Megan not so hopeful. :(

Film continues to become a niche product, something we'll have to get used to...

Type 55? That's one I was really hoping to work with at some point. Last I looked, Fuji only had standard instant film - nothing like that also created a negative. This was one of BBC Radio's three "top of the hour" stories this morning...

Well, I have a pretty big stockpile, so if you guys want to start submitting bids... :D

Besides, there are PS plug-ins that make a digital capture look like a Polaroid. That's pretty much the same thing, isn't it??? :p

I have some stockpiled, though I rarely use it anymore.

Now I've got an excuse to finish a set of projects built around the various types I've used.

Unfortunately this is truly the death knell for my Polaroid digital printers . . .

I even use to shoot for fun the 35mm b/w quick process (not really) film that was wonderfully contrasty.

Just more camera parts that will be consigned to the museum o' stuff sooner rather than later.

The Fuji quick-loads and instant films even though they fit the same backs and loaders are very different in result. They really are built for proofing more the were Polaroids products.

I have missed the 8x10 b/w Polaroid stuff for years as I just couldn't find a customer who was interested and I didn't have time.

I loved the Polaroid back for my Holga - of course, they stopped manufacturing that awhile ago. I dug the black and white.

I was thinking of biding on the next Polaroid 8 x 10 film holder and developer that came on ebay. I don't think so now. I will probability put the on Polaroid 4x5 inch Film Holder on ebay and recoup what little money I have in it, you never know what it will go for.

A couple of months ago, someone got the bright idea to buy polaroid camera's for the on-site staff, instead of digital cameras.

I'm still chuckling over this....
