Re: The "NEW" 50mm f/1.8 Lens War Thread!
Okay, we gotta keep this thread going, folks. Kinda died out there for a while.
Today the wife and I, along with our 13 year old niece, Sarah, got to spend the day taking care of Marcus, one of our church member's grandsons. So naturally I had to snap a few with the 50mm. All shot at f/1.8 with late afternoon sunlight and pretty much straight out of the camera.
He was a good boy all day today, by the way. And I learned I hadn't forgot how to change a diaper. :)

Are all you 50mm users getting tired of this thread? If not, then keep 'em comin'!
Here's a few from today. Our Chamber has sponsored a Country Market in which we have combined produce AND local art. We had a pretty good turnout for our opening day.
Canon XTi & 50mm, various f/stops and shutter speeds.
Yes, go thatta way...

Returned from vacation recently where I used the 50mm f/1.8 a fair amount of time.
Wouldn't have even purchased this lens if it weren't for this forum!
My apologies if you've already seen these images over in Nature/Wildlife forum.

I got one, I got one! I couldn't stand it any longer. I bought a 50mm 1.8 and had it in time to take to the beach for vacation. This is one of my daughter.

Good place to ask this, since this is the 50mm thread, but I am having a terrible time with the focus. shooting with an xti, but any shots at all where there is movement, I lose half of them from the focus. operator error, or the limits of shooting with a 1.8?

Try shooting in Aperture Priority mode, and stop the lens down to f/8 or higher, that should fix your problem. Maybe if you post some of the photos to which you are referring we might be able to lend a hand a little better.

Like others have said, the wide open F1.8 or F1.4 does have much DOF even 20 or 30 feet away! So you must have your AF setup correctly for the type of photography you doing.

I have both the XTi and 50mm and shoot primarily in Av mode, but if focusing is an issue when there is movement then you need to set your AF to AI Focus or Al Servo rather than One Shot. Either that or set it to the Sports mode. That should take care of your focusing problem, assuming that the problem pertains to your subject being out of focus when you take the picture. If the problem has to do with depth of field (DOF), then do like what was suggested above...shoot at f/8 or smaller aperture (f/8 to f/16).
Personally, I love shallow depth of field except for landscape shots, which means I generally like to shoot the 50mm wide open at f/1.8 and on up to f/2.8 (see my photos above) when taking pictures of people or objects.
Re: The "NEW" 50mm f/1.8 Lens War Thread!
I put mine back on my camera today because I couldn't get the dof I was after with my 17-40 F/4 L. I never realised how much I missed my little 50!!!
