My Pic on National Geographic Your Shot

I submitted a photo to National Geographic Your Shot and it was picked for the Daily Dozen this week.

    http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/your-shot/daily-dozen

I have to thank AgingEyes for the advice he gave me on how to create a black and white shot. Basically I created 2 hue and saturation layers on top of the original. One layer was used to desaturate the photo. The other, with the blend set to color, was used to adjust the tonal range. I took it a bit of a step farther and didn't desaturate completely, leaving a hint of color in one layer. It might not be a true black and white but I think it's an intereresting effect and the hint of color makes the image pop.

This is the same shot cropped differently but with the color removed, contrast and brightness tweaked, all on one layer.

And here's a high res version of the first shot:

    Excellent!

It's a great photo and you definitely deserve congratulations. Thanks for sharing the news with us. Thanks too, for telling us how you did the black-and-white conversion. There are lots of ways to do B&W conversions and almost all of them are better than simply desaturating. I think you did a great job.

How about some background on the photo? What's going on in this scene and how was it that you were there to capture it?

Thanks for the compliment. Sure, I'd love to tell you more about the photo.

The photo was taken on Monday, July 27, 2009 at around 7 AM, about an hour after dawn, on Assateague Beach, Virginia. I used an Olympus E-520 with the 14-42mm kit lens, 1/1600, f/7.1 at 42mm.

Every year the last week of July is "Pony Penning" week on Chincoteague Island, Virginia. The ponies actually live on Assateauge Island and the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department, which controls the herd, swim the ponies across the channel from Assateague to Chincoteague. They are then herded down main street and into the local carnival grounds. The next day, many of the foals are auctioned off. This raises money for the fire department to care for the herd and controls the pony population. Some foals are sold as "buy backs" and returned to the island, especially if they appear to be exemplary of the breed.

The herding of the ponies takes a few days. On the Sunday before the pony swim, the "Saltwater Cowboys" as the horsemen who herd the horses are called, start to gather half of the herd and take them to a pony pen on Assateague Island. Early on that Monday morning, they gather the remainder of the ponies and herd them down the beach. It's a beautiful site and I was lucky enough to be there this year.

I just saw that my "Nipped in the Bud" shot of two dogs at the park just went live today on NG.

Erik - I hope you don't me hijacking your thread - but I didn't want to start a new thread

No problem. Congratulations on your shot. It really captures the action. The "expression" on the face of the pug mix is priceless.
