My Latest Carpentry Project
(other than our entire house I mean!)
Between studying for school and remodeling our house I had time to throw together a bookshelf/hutch one evening for my cluttered desk. It's made of MDF (medium density fiberboard) which I had never worked with before but it is a PLEASURE! Cuts easily, routes easily, very nice material. Anyway, just thought I'd share. When I ever get to fill it up with stuff I'll post a pic of it in place.
Thanks,
Rick

Hey that's really cool Rick! I have always wanted to get into woodwroking, but life just has not permitted me yet.
How long did it take you to make this?
Re: My Latest Carpentry Project
Very nice Rick. The assymetry works very well in the overall design as well as the edge design.
I see you are getting the wardrobe for your next self portrait session ready in the background. :D

Please tell me you wear those pants out! Awesome!
This is really neat. I've been meaning to ask you how you did on your x-mas projects. I think it was around this time last year you and I both said we were planning on making a lot of our gifts for 2005. How'd you do? I made a quilt for my oldest, as she's getting too tall for the one she got from Gramma when she was born. Umm...I think that's it.
2006 will be my year though! :D
Re: My Latest Carpentry Project
Yeah, MDF is esy to work and strong, takes a good coat of paint without much preparation.
No wonder so much commercial self-assembly furniture is made with MDF !
Mine is nothimg to write home about compared to your design, all square and functional. A set of shelves, clothes cupboard, and computer desk that is fitted along one wall of he front bedroom.
Drastically over-engineered so that my stepson could climb it to fetch his toys (boys will be boys) but I was astonished it stood up to my wife climbing it to put her doll boxes away on top of it !!
MDF warps and falls apart in the damp, but indoors it's a great material to use.

Thanks Almo!
I actually knocked it out in an evening. Believe me, the lack of workmanship shows if you get real close ;) I've been doing carpentry and remodeling for a few years so I have all the tools and some primer to get me going. Woodworking is a wonderful pastime if you have the budget for all the cool tools and the a space big enough to make a mess in :)
Re: My Latest Carpentry Project
Chunk, you caught me :D Those clothes were supposed to be a surprise, you ruined the whole thing :p
Actually those belong to my gf's 8 year old. Not sure I'd fit. Not my style anyway.
Thanks for comments!
Re: My Latest Carpentry Project
Unfortunately I don't have style that cool so I can't lay claim to the pants. The pink back pack however...
I did actually make Christmas presents for Christmas '04. THAT was an undertaking. I think I will wait until I'm retired before trying that again! I did some Intarsia for family I thought wouldn't be pissed about not getting something plastic for Christmas :D
Re: My Latest Carpentry Project
Yeah I am definitely sold on MDF for future projects. This shelf/hutch is actually a temporary fix until our office gets remodeled and I have room for a REAL desk! Maybe I'll make that too if I have the time. I saw some really beautiful granite slabs that would look great sitting on a desk top...
I had the feeling the MDF could take a coat of paint without primer, but I went ahead and primed it anyway. I think it would have done well without. Antique White looks good on projects like this one, imo.
Thanks for the comments!
Re: My Latest Carpentry Project
Rick, you don't have nearly enough shelves.:D

Re: My Latest Carpentry Project
Wow. My first thought was that you had built an 8 track player for PhotoDad. ;)
Really neat desk with lots of artistic flair.
I'm a non-practicing woodworker, but I could watch the Yankee Carpenter for hours.
Re: My Latest Carpentry Project
I can spend all day remodeling the house, and then sit down in front of New Yankee Workshop or TLC or Discovery Channel and watch people remodel their houses for another few hours. There is definitely something wrong with me.
Re: My Latest Carpentry Project
Yes, you're right, but my guiding principle was to get the whole project out of one 4x8 sheet :D
