    My first published shots!

Hey everybody, I just got my first shots published in The Gateway (University of Alberta paper). They are from the World Masters Games. This isn't too big of a deal, but I still have this excellent feeling that my pictures are published! One step closer to working for SI, haha.

    Here's the paper:

The badminton (top left) and volleyball (main picture) are taken by me.

Some more of my WMG pictures can be seen here.

    Thanks everybody.

Nope, they aren't all mine, but the main volleyball and the top left badminton picture are mine. I think that 2 out of 5 isn't bad! And no, we don't get paid for our shots. The paper gives us film (for those who still use film) and some community gear to use, but that's about it! Just curious if you know, how much would I make if I got my pictures published in a regular daily paper?

Pay for newspapers is very different for each paper. One I shoot for pays $25 a job plus mileage, it dosen't matter if they run 1 or 10 shots. Another pays $19 a shot but no mileage, normally they run two shots. It works out nice if I shoot the same job for both papers, which happens a lot.
Now the real pay is for things like the AP. At Indy they pay $175 for the first shot and $125 the rest. Of course getting one they will run is tough, especially since there are 6-10 shooters in each turn! They ran two from the 500 last year, nothing this year. Basically they want wrecks and the aftermath. One shot of mine they ran last year was of Mark Taylor sitting on the track looking up at the saftey workers. That shot ran in England and the US. Then there was Giaffone bouncing off the wall in practice, that one ran in several US papers as well as Brazil. Nothing like seeing your work wind up in a newspaper in another country!
My first published shots were a football game, and the shots led to the storyline "Royals Smoke Triton Central" as the photos showed the smoke from the hog roast that blew across the field, then in the second half the fog that rolled in.
Freelance shooting is a tough racket, one I may write about at some point and see if Photo John puts it up on the site.
