My catalog cover!

I recieved a copy of the catalog that one of my photos is featured on. The bird photo is mine. I was very excited when I learned that one of my photos was choses for the cover, but a little dissapointed when I found out what photo it was. I was even more dissapointed when I found out that they went to press with the low res image I submitted. It was saved at 72dpi @ 400x600 pixels. You can see the pixilation on the actual cover, all the other photos look much better. Anyway, here is a copy of the cover.

Yeah - can you get an original layout of it on a PDF? Now's the time to ask - just a different way of presenting it. Again, congrats! I'll look for my copy in the mail soon.

I hear what you're saying about the pic. Now that I'm getting published on a regular basis again, I'm my own worst critic, and sometimes beat myself up over all kinds of things with the way my work looks.

I know it's not exactly the same as your situation, but still, you need to accept two things.

One, at some point the image will be out of your control, and editors and art directors will sometimes (often???) make decisions that differ from what you envision.

Two, with this kind of use of your work, I think the fact that you can list them as a credit is more important than the actual tear sheet itself...

BTW, now that you've seen what can happen, you need to communicate better with the art department in the future to make sure they have high-res files in time for their deadlines.

Steve, I should be able to get a PDF of this. If I do, I will have to swap out the image they used with a higher quality one, and have it reprinted for myself. Thanks for the idea.

This is very true Steve. The person I submitted the files too knew that I had better quality images. The only problem is, he doesn't work on these books anymore, and the person who does, didn't have that info. She knows now! It didn't help that I was on vacation and didn't get the email telling me about the cover until almost 2 weeks after it was sent.

I know what you mean about the art directors making changes too. The picture of the old mill is a very popular photo destination in this area, and a place that I have gone to quite often. It took me a minute to figure out why this image was so different than the ones I have taken myself. Then it hit me... the water fall is on the wrong side of the mill! They flipped the image horizontally! I know the woman who took it, so I will ask her if she did that when she submitted it, or if the art director did it.

Congrats on getting your pic published, but what a bummer about the low res being put on there. Who was in charge of proofing it????

Congrats Micheal! It looks great there, low res and all. Definetely a good feeling. I had the same mixed emotions when i found out that a gallery had used a low res image I sent them ( thought they would ask me for a higher res image if they chose it) for a full page ad in an Art and recreation publication. But, it somehow still looked ok. Your looks great. Glad to see it.

Hey that's great! I can't believe that someone who was in charge of something like that would let such a low-resolution image go to print, shame on them.

A close friend of mine is (was) the founder of Land's Ends personal Chef. Small world.

Great way to start off the year! I can't wait to get my copy of the catalog so I can show it off.

I don't know that I'd do this - just based on integrity, etc. Maybe I'm worrying about it too much though. I agree with Steve; Land's End looks great on a resume - especially two covers! (repeat business, second is sometimes more important than the first)

I just wanted to add to the long list of congratulations. That's quite an accomplishment. I can understand your frustration about the low res image, but I doubt any non-photogs would ever notice a difference. It still looks good to me.

Michael, this is a very common one. Yeah, it makes me a little crazy, too. I picture and compose my scenes very carefully, and once an image is shot and processed, it's forever etched in my mind.

What's really weird is when they do it with people, as faces are definitely not symmetrical. A mag once flipped a horizontal portrait I shot to get the negative space on the opposite side to place type. When I first saw the pic, I did a double take as I almost didn't recognize the it. I mean, I knew it was the shot I took, but it looked strange...

Now, that's not too bad if they're consistent, but that mag ran a TOC (table of contents) thumbnail of the same shot, but oriented the correct way. IMO, that confuses the viewer, and also gives away that production is altering the artwork. A no no...

Looks like they used a flipped shot of our favorite mill taken by someone else too.

It surprises me that whoever was in charge of this publication would not shoot for higher standards in file quality for reproduction.

Stepping on the other side of the fence for a minute, some times it makes more sense for the image to be facing left vs. right or vice-versa. There's a guy we all know here :) who took some shots of my band last summer and we did a new promo piece using his work. I'm on the left, but we flipped the shot of me around so I'd be pointing out and so would the guy on the other end of the line (I'm not a lefty).

Actually my thought was exactly the opposite of this but the guy on the other end does this stuff for the band, so that's another example of what can happen (suggest one thing and another happens). By doing it this way, everyone is facing a different direction - not sure if anyone else would have noticed what I saw at first, but I thought it needed something. Here it is:

Steve, I did ask for a PDF copy today, but never heard anything. I'm not going to press the issue, so if I don't get a copy, it's not a big deal.

Roger, I have no idea of this catalog will be shipped to the UK or not. I will try to find out tomorrow. I would like to know the circulation of this catalog too.

Chunk, you are correct, they did flip the Hyde Mill photo. I know the woman who took it quite well, but I haven't talked to here since I got a copy of the catalog. I'm gessing that she doesn't know about it being flipped yet.

As far as the image quality goes, I'm sure if they knew I had a better file, they would have asked for it. This catalog is used primarily for clearing out inventory, and isn't a huge priority.

Fantastic Michael, and congratulations from the frozen "south"!!!...that's 2 cover shots for you with Lands End...I think it's awesome that they were willing to use your low res shot. It shows that even at low res, your photos are top notch!! Look forward to seeing it in print...
