My attempt at street photography

I took this last Saturday at the parade. From standing on the trailer waiting for the parade to start, this guy was behind me.

Did you get any more shots? I would love to see them! I used to work in Midtown and be able to catch part of the parade on lunch, but now I'm stuck down in the no-man's-land of Battery Park City, not even close to any St. Paddy's festivities.

I think you caught a great subject for this pic. Good pose, too...

I'm not sure about the angle of the shot, though. Horizontal and vertical line elements that run just SLIGHTLY off your frame edges (not parallel) usually distract or disturb the viewer.

Plus that center vertical is so close to and so closely mimmicks the subject that it competes for the eye's attention.

So you see the extreme challenge of street shooting. Especially if you want a candid shot of the subject. You have to be able to compose an overall composition on the fly, but still capture a good pose or expression of what may be a moving subject.

How did you feel about photographing these people? I remember you from Chicago as being a somewhat shy and not at all pushy person (except of course, when the food was placed on our table at lunch :D ). So, did you freely mingle and shoot, or are you more of a "lurker", trying not to get caught by your subjects? ;)

This was the first time I have ever just gone out and shot people, so I was kind of lurky, but also mingled a bit. This guy was a lurky shot, he was standing waiting for the parade to start, and I was standing talking to my cousin. But I did shoot other people, who were aware I was shooting them. And most were more than fine with it, some waved and blew kisses to me.

So while I have a long way to go, I am working on my pushy-ness :)

Megan, I have a few more, I'll dig them up this weekend.

I'm not going to try and add anything to what Steve said about the image I think he is right on. However your eye for the subject and the pose you caught were very good. Even with the tech problems that Steve points out I like this image. Nice job.
