Macro Fun!

One of my favorite photo activities is to get out the 105 mm and shoot closeup. You can make the ordinary seem extraordinary sometimes and have a ball doing it. Yesterday afternoon I first noticed one of Joy's flowers in full bloom on the deck and it seemed to be calling my name over and over until I pulled out the D700 and the 105mm to snap a few pictures of it. Here are some of the results. Yep I did attach a tub for a couple of the images. Now that I have started things off let's see some of your macro shots.

Beautiful shots, all of them, but #2 is especially striking!

Very nice Larry! I too really like #2 and that crisp edge around the last image really makes it stand out as well.

Did you shoot these against a black background or is that how they came out because of the lighting?

Thanks for the look and the comments. I too think #2 is my favorite of this lot. As for the background it was a piece of black cloth draped over the deck rail behind the plant that gave me the nice black background. In the field I will sometimes use the black cover on a folding reflector that I carry with me to achieve the same effect.

I love the effect. I keep a couple yards of black velvet around to do the same thing. :)

Well I haven't been out shooting my normal subjects in weeks so I don't have anything new to share. I plan on shooting N&W today and tomorrow so we'll see what I get.

I did shoot this for my daughter a few weeks ago. Buggers are faster than one might expect. Much easier shooting running dogs.

Right after I "hung up" from making the previous post, I hit the trails with my trusty 300mm, a pocket full of extension tubes, and my faithful puppy (who is now trained to sit patiently and wait whenever I stop to shoot something).

Managed to get three quick portraits with what was left of the morning light.

I have the Sigma version of the 105mm, and love it. Adding extension tubes adds another whole dimension, not to mention change the way you think about DOF and lighting.

I've added some recent and not so recent macro shots taken with a combination of extension tubes and 105mm Macro, as well as just the macro lens.

Outstanding contribution to the thread danic! Tubes do open up a whole new world of macro and I have Loupey to thank for reintroducing me to them. I used them years ago but just got away from them until he until he started posting some great tube shots on the N&W forum. I absolutely love that last one, maybe because I'm such a fan of the color blue.

Can someone explain these tubes please? I enjoy macro, but am fairly new to getting more in depth with my photography.

An extension tube is just a spacer that sets the lens further away from the body. The sensor is now further from the rear of the lens so the focus point is closer to the front of the lens. If you can focus closer, you can make it look bigger. - TF

I'm thinking of stealing your ideas here with some flowers I just gave my wife.

Wonderful, beautiful shots OT. 2 & 5 had my jaw dropping.

My missus always complained when I took photo's of "her" flowers :rolleyes5:
