Mack Camera Warranties - Worth it?

I've got an extra warranty for my 10D body from Mack Camera, and am now wondering if I should also grab one for the 100-400 I am buying. I haven't had to use them, but I know that some warranties look good on paper, but turn out to be totally worthless. Or, if they do actually fix things, it's a 8 week turnaround or longer.

Anyone have experience with Mack Camera? I checked reseller ratings, but didn't find them in the database. For the lens, its only 30 more dollars for 3 years of warranty, but if they aren't a good company and aren't gonna help me out, that's not even worth it.

    Anyone know?

    Cool Excellent rep.......

Mack Camera (Mackcamera.com) where the Mack Warranties come from - enjoys an excellent reputation for many years. They are about an hour from me in NJ. I have a Mack Warranty for the Rebel. Actually I paid $80 for it because I didn't know I could get it at Compuserve for $35 on the web! Same warranty! I also have one for the G3. I've spoken to Mack myself and they are very nice to deal with. They respond immediately to emails and phone calls. They did my warranty over the phone as there was a glitch while trying to do it online.

I haven't purchased warranties for the lenses. I have 2 "L" lenses but they both cost about $600. I might consider getting a warranty if I paid over $1,000 though. ;)

Talking Re: Mack Camera Warranties - Worth it?

Sean, I have a 5D and three "L" lenses along with another pile of stuff I have acquired over the years. To buy an extra warranty or not I think depends on what the equipment is used for. If you are taking portraits and stuff where the equipment is not going to get roughed up, then I am not sure I would recommend the extra warranty. If you are working in areas where the stuff might get banged around a bit, then maybe that is something to consider - depends exactly what the warranty will cover.

I have had Canon equipment for almost 20 years (more or less) and have never had anything go wrong with any of it. Canon makes good stuff and the quality of their product is fantastic, in my humble opinion.

I shoot mostly landscapes and nature, with some family, and have never had to have anything fixed. Maybe I am just lucky?? Maybe I don't use it enough? My advice, if you don't already do this, is to put the extra warranty money into insurance for your equipment. I am not sure about the camera business, but in the electronics business most of that money for an extended warranty goes right into the salesman's pocket (my son once worked in the business) HTH a bit.

    Cheers,

    WesternGuy
