    Lunch Time At The Feeder

Took these on Mother's Day in Nashville, NC. Shot with the Coolpix 5700 through three panes of glass.

I know they're crap, but I thought they were kinda cute.

This fledgling could fly and feed itself, but it was used to moma feeding him.

    Mark.

I'm with you. When I first saw him, I wondered how he got to the feeder. Eventually, I saw him eating on his own, and watched him fly away from the feeder and back again. He spent about half his time eating, and half his time waiting to be fed.

Number 2 is my favorite. I tried to get a shot of mom feeding him, but this was as close as I got. Shutter lag on a Coolpix 5700 is around a half second if it's already focused. You've really got to anticipate the action well to get a shot. Apparently, I was off by a fraction.

Nice images, but please tell me how you came to the conclusion that the fledgling is a HE ;)

BTW....that is a VERY EARLY european house sparrow fledgling to the best of my knowledge, though I don't keep track of errr .. introduced trash birds

"that the fledgling is a HE" ;)

I didn't, really. Could just as easily have been a her. I did mention that I saw "it" fly away from the feeder and back. And that "it" was waiting for moma to feed...it? I just picked him. Could very well be a her.

"I don't keep track of errr .. introduced trash birds"

Yeah, what's up with that? Those Pilgrims brought sparrows to America because they wanted the birds Shakespeare wrote about. Hmmm. Almost as bad as the government introducing Kudzu to stop erosion on slopes. NO, wait, that was worse!!! ;-)

    Hehehe.

Unfortunately, the birds have probably been watching the humans. How many people do you know in their 20's, 30's, some even in their 40's, still living at home? I know way too many of them.

Actually, the bird parents are smarter than the human parents. They kick their kids out and stop taking care of them! :-O
