    Why all the Noise?

I am wondering why blue skies are generally showing so much noise at ISO's of 400 or below using Canon 30D and Tamrom 18 - 200 XR Di II lens. Posting pics at 100, 200 & 400 ISO's as examples. Should there be this much noise (or is it actually my monitor?)
    Thanks

    Re: Why all the Noise?

I can't see noise at this resolution.
I can just make out JPEG conversion artefacts, perhaps you turned down the quality a lot to get under the 195K limit for posting?

How about posting a 1:1 scaled crop of part of the sky, 640 pixels square?
Then we could see the problem (if there is one) more easily.
OK, then I coulsee it easier because my eyesight is not so good looking at 640x480 on a 1600x1200 screen.

One cruel irony of these forums is that a compressed jpeg viewed in a web browser is probably the worst way to try to trouble shoot images, beit noise, color balance, or any of dozens of other aspects.

I shoot a lot with a 5D at all settings and ISOs, and have never noticed any noise problems in any parts of my images...

Here's a small cut of one of them. I only see it on blue sky.

Maybe it's just my monitor - I have not tried printing - i guess that is next step.

you can get around the limits for forum size posting by first posting in the gallery and then using [img] tags to forum post it.

You can do it that way after hosting the image at another site, but one reason for size limitations is so that they can be seen without having to scroll all over the place to see the whole image. With a situation like this, enlarge the image in Photoshop to 100%, then crop a small section of the affected area (turn off the pixel and inch dimensions). I've just guessed at a size that's about how big a 400x600 pixel image displays here and it seems to work. There may be a more exact way to do it, but it gets the job done - and it's still easy to see the thread without having to scroll left & right.
