Letter to George on which camera to purchase

Worth the read if you have ever been asked "what camera should I buy?".

ahahahaha, that's brilliant! And yes I've been asked the question many times.

In fact many times I've been asked by complete strangers for advise on the matter because they see me with my D300 and 70-200/17-55 f/2.8 lens.

It may be true for those of us who peruse the forums, but the vast majority are happy with Step #1 and any more would be a waste of money. – TF

That was awesome. I can say I'm about in the middle of that process. I went through a lot of that after buying my d40, but have been very content with my d90 and my lenses (but I'd love more). A d300 may come someday...or whatever model is out when I can afford/need it.

I'm not sure that I completely on board with that whole thing. I have a D90 and a 3 lenses including the kit 18-105 and love it. I don't want anything bigger, heavier or more expensive. I like the challenge of taking great photos with what I've got. It's really funny running around with people with tanks for cameras and lenses, don't get me wrong there is a place for the big guys but I think it comes down to what you want to do with your equipment.

Good read, been there and done that. 3 years from P&S to a canon mk 2n. One of the deals is I wished I hadn't sold my 28-135 lens, worked great on the RBL XT and if it came to a situation where it broke I would nt be out as much as my L lenses.

Hah, I used an Olympus Stylus 410 for years, needless to say it died a while back and I just didnt have a cam at all for a while. Anyway, I started off on the low end of DSLRs and got a D5000, I have not been happier spending over 700 bucks for anything. However I must say that gear wise, I am stuck on what kind of bag I want haha. I live in so. cal. so I want something incognito and not flashy. That is about it so far, but crap happens gradually and its a high possibility that I will want something bigger and better later on. Human nature at its best.

Hah nice, I think you have something there. Need more pizazz.

I am right where I want to be, camera wise. While my S5IS is not a pocket camera, it's small enough to go where I need and want it to. And my Rebel XT is capable of taking far better pictures than the guy behind it is. I have read many posts, on other forums, about how the XT especially but all older bodies are just obsolete tech and not even worth carrying. I think some people are looking for machines to overcome their lack of creativity and ability. That is not saying I am the most creative or able photographer, but even my wife's Olympus Stylus 300 is more than capable of magnificent photos if it's limitations are considered during shooting.

The name of the game is PHOTOGRAPHY, not BUY MORE FANCY GEAR. Go take pictures, study each one you take and determine what you, not the equipment, can do better.

And I still want a 5DII. But my wants do not cause me pain.
