    LCD or CRT?

Since I think it matters, when it comes to closely looking at a photo for critique purposes, I would be interested in knowing, how many photographers here are using LCD screens and how many are using CRTs.

LCD screens tend to go for fewer colours and greater contrast and gamma. Laptops tends to have their screens set at overly bright and higher gamma right from the factory.
CRTs vary with some such as Sony and Viewsonic tending toward saturation and others with weaker colour but good resolution.

I am using a 19" CRT, because all the studies, I have seen, indicate that they are better than LCD screens for photo and 3D graphic work. What are you using?

I'm on a "old" IMac G4 (circa 2002) with the 15" screen (lcd that is). It is calibrated with the Monaco Optic XR package, spyder and software.

While the finest CRT's such the Sony Artisan may still be the ultimate reference, today's best LCD screens by Apple, Eizo and LaCie come pretty close, although their rendering do is different.

    Hey Megan!

On the other hand you oughta ask yourself, do I really need it? My Mac certainly isn't as fast as I wish it was as I deal with RAW files all the time but it still gets the job done very well. I do not feel like replacing it in the short run although I am fully aware of the latest technological advances.

i just use my LCD on my macbook, but I've put a good amount of time into trying to calibrate it. It's not perfect, no, but it's pretty close to the standard.

Samsung 20 inch LCD monitor. Haven't calibrated it yet, but it's on my task list. I still think CRT's have LCD's beat for accuracy and brightness, but I sure do like the space savings on my small desk.

I have a laptop (dell) and a flat panal shiney pretty monitor (dell) on the desk.

Screw accuracy, I just want one that looks pretty!

On the laptop, I occasionally use, and the LCD screens, I find that the brightness of the image depends on the angle of view and it becomes extremely difficult to judge the exposure of a photo.

Yeah, the angle your at really makes a difference. Which I why I do 90% of my editing on the desktop. But on occasion, I need to use the laptop, and haven't had any issues, because I know the angle.

But like I said, I base my decisions on whether or not it's pretty.

    Re: LCD or CRT?

I switched to a 24inch Dell LCD and I am loving the capability and space it gives me. As long as I keep it calibrated it looks great and the prints are matching the display so I can't complain. Had to upgrade my graphics card to get the full capability. I also find editing small details (stray hair, etc) much easier.

    Thanks,

Exactly - I'm not a gadget person to begin with! I'm quite happy with my G4 - just got some memory cards, installed them myself, and Photoshop runs just fine. However, I've got some freelance possibilities going on, which could mean going on the road and turning the images over to the client fairly quickly. In that case, I will have to upgrade to something slightly more portable.

Absolutely! I have two desktops with old Sony Trinitron CRT monitors that are carefully calibrated with ColorVision hardware. I also have a laptop that I use for traveling. I have also tried to calibrate the LCD monitor on the laptop, but I've never been happy. The Colorado images that I recently posted were set up on my laptop and on my desktops the photos look a bit contrasty and oversaturated.

I don't trust LCDs yet. The Eizo LCDs are beautiful, for sure. But I just don't want to invest in something that changes when I slouch or sit up a bit. I have high hopes for OLED technology and hope we see it in computer monitors soon. Canon is supposedly working on hi-def OLED television sets. If they do that, then I would think computer monitors would follow.

    Fingers crossed.

I still have some Amigas that are great for 3D work and television animation and as for film, it is definitely better for shooting in the jungle...richer, more vibrant colours and lots of range. Battery power is also not a problem, and moisture is less problematic too.

    Re: LCD or CRT?

Trying to sort out why I am not always seeing the same thing on my monitor as some others are. Interesting for Viewfinder and Photo Critique that LCDs according to the net, expecially the 19 inch and larger ones often tend toward pixellation with compressed images such as the ones posted on this site. Monitor calibration is unreliable unless you are using very expensive hardware and it only creates profiles for your own equipment.
Irrespective of monitor calibration, a Mac photo will likely look darker on a PC and a PC photo will look in some cases look considerably brighter on a MAC. IPhoto on the Mac has a bug causing problems with colour accuracy. The sRGB colour space is more standardized across equipment than any other, so if you are using Adobe RGB, you may see some differences. To complicate things further, some web servers have their own gamma or brightness level that is different from both Mac and PC.

The point is, when it comes to brightness/exposure, colour saturation, pixellation and sharpness, we are probably not all seeing the same thing.

    Re: LCD or CRT?

Just got a Dell 2405FPW at work, and couldn't resist trying it for my latest DTM images.
Unlike my laptop monitor, it seems pretty much unaffected by my position and so calibrating it woudl be worthwhile, it's pretty good, but definitely needs calibrating.
Looks like the Matrox dual head card I've got has adjustable curves for all 3 colours so I can adjust the monitor for best results first and then do the final tweak on the card.

My home CRT is going CRACK ! and the image darkens and zooms, it's the skark gaps in the HT side and I suspect it may be on its last legs. So I'm definitely in the market for a large wide LCD replacement.

I tried multiple monitors too, after all two 17" LCDs are cheaper than one 25". For my day job there are lots of advantages, but for photogrpahy? It drove me nuts that I couldn't get the same colour on both monitors. In the end I found out the Matrox G450 card doesn't have LUT on each output, so one can be controlled and the other not.
So for home I'll settle for one 2405 as my next monitor.

    Re: LCD or CRT?

I finally had to cave in when CRT's evaporated from the market. I have two LaCie 321 monitors on my main workstation, calibrated with the Monaco Optix and EZ Color. They're a lot crisper than the CRT's, and the angle of view is a lot better than I'd been expecting.

I still can't get them to render colors EXACTLY the way I'd like, but I never was satisfied with the CRT's either. I think I'm expecting too much from two totally different display media (monitor=transmisive, print=reflective). Print Preview in Photoshop sure helps, but I'm looking for perfiction.

My friend has an Apple Cinema Display, it seems about on a par with the La Cie's. Perhaps a certain ammount of discrepancy is unavoidable?

I have a 12 iBook that has a fairly bright screen. I use it for the bulk of my photo editing, but I have to admit that when I go to edit the photo that I just sold, I will be using a CRT.

    Re: LCD or CRT?

I have always preferred LCDs. CRTs often have that high pitched sound that perhaps only young ears like mine really get bothered by, they hurt my eyes, and I'm never pleased with colors on anything in my price range.

I also have a bit of a space restriction nowadays.

At school for our video editing compy's we still use CRTs. I will notice the flicker and all that stuff. I just don't like them very much.

I've had LCDs for the past 7 or 8 years, on a long line of laptops. My most recent one before my Macbook Pro was an HP with brightview, which looked great but the overly contrasty and oversaturated rendition is not so good for my photo editing, and I was sick of fingerprints, dust, marks etc. without ever touching it, plus that reflection...ugh.

My macbook pro has the matte LCD, and I've never looked back. For when I add a desktop system in the next 9-12 months, I'll be getting an apple cinema display.
