Dinner! Carlito's was small and charming, full of pretty people who drove shiney red cars. And that was just our group! :D

I played more with Photo-John's shutter drag technique. I named it "photogra-tourettes" and promptly gave a demonstration. Much to the amusement of my co-diners.

We got back to Brian's about midnight. I crashed.

The next morning, I took him out to breakfast to say thanks. We had an incredible mexican breakfast that made me realize once again how great the cuisine in California is. "Food" was definitely a great theme for this photogathering.

I bade farewell to Brian and took off up the PCH to Laguna Beach. The marine layer burned off just as I arrived. It made me realize how much I miss the beach and the Pacific Ocean.

I won't get too much into the rest of my trip, since this is the photogathering thread. I drove east to Joshua Tree and ended up spending the rest of the day there shooting. After sunset, the stars came out and the Milky Way became visible. Beautiful!

I'll post the shots from my film cameras when I get the rolls back in a few days.

Thanks to all for a wonderful vacation to SoCal. Thanks Eric, Brian, Loren & Karen, and PJ for all your contributions and help. Penny, Gene, & Ray, let's get started on that Arizona Before 2010 Gathering!

I'm jealous! I still haven't been able to view my LA shots. My card reader fried a couple weeks ago and I haven't replaced it yet. I'll have to remember and do that today. :)

Despite my dislike for LA, I had a great time and enjoyed getting out and shooting. It was great meeting Allen, Taieesh (his cute girlfriend - whom I appologize to for slaughtering the spelling of her name, assuming I rememberd it), Loren, Karen and Eric. And it was awesome getting to see Rick, Penny, Gene and Ray again. I was very surprised at how well everyone got along and at how diverse our backgrounds are.

Eric, thanks to you for putting this together. I'm glad we finally had a SoCal Gathering. Loren and Karen, thanks for suggesting Carlito's. The food was fantastic. Penny and Gene, thanks for coming all the way down to my place for the BBQ (Rick too for that matter) and rick, thanks for breakfast Sunday.

I really needed this weekend and I'm glad I was able to spend it with such an awsome group of people!

Nice shots Gene! I especially like the one of the Bradbury building and the shot directly below it. Both are very nice. I was also glad to see someone got a couple shots of subjects that caught my eye, but I didn't shoot as well as variances on subjects I did shoot.

Thank you also for the kind words regarding my food. I appreciate them, even if they are exadgerated. ;)

    Re: Sweetbreads at Carlito's
As we were all discussing what sweetbreads actually are, and someone said "brians" which is what we all eventually agreed they were, our consensus didn't quite sit right with me so I decided to do a little bit of googling.

Sweetbreads are the thymus glands from a cow, usually under one year old. Sweetbreads can also come from lamb or pigs as well, but I confirmed with Carlito's that they use the beef variety.

If anyone is interested in reading more on the subject, check out the following link:

I may have to. My wife freaked out when I told her I ate BRAINs now I have to tell her I have absolutely no idea what I ate :D :D

Brian, get your card reader tonight. Best Buy closes at 9PM. I'm looking forward to your pictures :)

I can't believe it is actually called Sweetbread. It's not sweet nor is it bread, discuss amongst yourselves

To Gene and Penny, the pictures are great and so was meeting you two!

    All right, more pics!!

Rick, your last Joshua Tree photo is sweeeeet! And I've got a pic of you taking a pic of the Mayimas that I'm gonna have to post later, hehe. I also can't wait to see what you develop from your roll on the Mayima.

And it looks like Gene and Penny have been practicing. The building shots are impressive!

Anxiously awaiting on Brian and Loren & Karen.:)

    Newer Downtown Los Angeles
Although we were hanging around the historic part of Downtown Los Angeles, We have skyscrapers just like other big cities. The building in the middle of the shot is the tallest building in Los Angeles. I think it is called the Library Tower but it has gone through a few names.

    Added:

The building is the 5th largest in the world. Click here for more info on the US Bank Tower.

    My humble few
Having had a late start on Friday night, and a way too early start on Saturday Karen and I didn't last long through the day.

After Grand Central Market we crashed at the hotel until dinner...so we don't have many photos to share. Most importantly, we got to meet all of the great people and many met Karen for the first time.

Eric, great job in organizing the event and keeping it orderly. It was great....

I am happy that everybody liked the restaurant..it's very special.

Penny, Gene, Rick, John, Allen and gfriend, Brian, Eric, Ray (show off) thanks for the time and great company.

Loren, Karen, Montana, and Max (at school)... in 6-7 months we'll have little Allesandra or Benicio to be our muse...

    Loren,

I can now see why PJ is so obsessed with that T4. In the hands of someone who knows how to use it, it is an amazing camera. Your shots all look great and they each have a mood of their own.

Remember the billboard on Broadway of the boy with wings behind him. That is an advertisement for a photographer's exhibit currently touring. It is in one Gene's posted shots. His work is amazing and according Allen (he went to the exhibit), there is no digital effects happening.

    Check out the site.

Remember I pointed out this guy when we were at the intersection? I thought he was sleeping in the shot but I guess not :D

Love the pics Loren! That P&S Yashica averages $100 on Ebay...wow! So much for getting one.:(

I bought a new card reader and a new combo USB2 / IE1394 Fireware PCI card for my computer. I'll get it installed and try and get some photos up tonight.

And Eric.. Based on what I've seen from that T4, I think $100 is a pretty good deal.

Hey Brian... looking forward to seeing your pics. Again it was great meeting you.

I have to say that it's been the best asset to my photo bag. It doesn't offer a ton of control, but you know it's in focus because of the led lights in the viewfinder. Lock in and let the Carl Zeiss lens take over.

I used to have the T4 Zoom which was good, but the fixed 35mm lens makes for quick start and the perfect documentary lens.
