    Katrina Storm skies.....AMAZING!
Somebody emailed me these images today. There are 9 photos of the sky right before Katrina struck. I never saw skies like these - beautiful and scarey!

Scroll down - then you can click on the smaller image - and "zoom in" on the right side to see larger view.

My jaw just hit the floor. It's beautiful, but makes me want to run for the hills screaming. So scary.

Sorry Liz, but you've been duped. I have seen these many times before, in particular when I was researching painting clouds, way before Katrina.

The most incredible clouds I've ever seen where during a tornado event back around 2000 or so. We were driving home from Indiana when the warnings starting popping up. We ended up driving half way to Las Vegas because the storm event was so large that every town we drove through was under a tornado watch. The next morning we woke up and all the towns that we had considered staying at had been hit by at least one tornado. The clouds at sunset behind us where awesome and scary. We figured we'd keep going west and eventually we'd be clear.

    True, but regardless...
Well, to me it doesn't make a difference, as they are still amazingly beautful images, but yeah, my first thought (having been through a handful of hurricanes myself) was that the skies of an approaching hurricane don't usually look anything like that.

But, I'm no expert, so I thought, well maybe...

Stunning pics. Dramatic storm clouds are one of my absolute favorite things to look at and experience out in the real world!

   Well, it didn't dawn on me to check snopes to see if photos were photos...or clouds were clouds........or even photos at all......or even clouds at all.

At any rate, Seb, I do appreciate the information and the link. Thank you! And I'm glad I read the link because they aren't of Katrina but they are REAL photos of storm clouds. The link you provided contains another link to the original photos which are even more awesome - and there are more of them.

Yeah, the site has some truly stunning shots. I hope you weren't offended, email forwards are a pet peeve of mine and I hate it when people are taken by them.

    Sebastian,

I was not offended at all - hope it didn't sound that way. I'm glad you provided the information. Actually a few weeks ago I posted something on the Off-Topic forum that someone pointed out wasn't true - it was all the things a cell phone can do. Since my cell phone is capable of one item out the 5 they listed, I assumed they were all true. I also am skeptical of email forwards, but both of these emails were sent to me by good friends who usually check snopes. I also gave them the info you provided.

Thanks for asking, but no......not at all.

Yeah, me too. But they're not always bad.

I read somewhere that Bill Gates is testing a beta version of Outlook's forwarding feature, and he's paying testers something like $1000 for each email address you forward a test message to.

I figure should make enough in the next week or so doing this to retire...

    Ya think???? :D

BTW, my favorite spam message by far this year had the subject:

"Hillary Clinton needs to know if you'll be voting for her or Obama, and she'll pay you $500 for the information..."

    Priceless...

a friend of mine storm chases with Mike Hollingshead (the original photographer for those images from extremeinstability.com) and I have to tell you the storied these guys can tell you over a few beers are astounding. Having their truck picked up and set back down again on it's wheels......500 feet from the road in the middle of a cornfield..... without even bending the stalks of corn around them, and that was just the first story. I had to keep up with them drinking 'cause the stories alone scared the crap out of me lol.

I have always wanted to go chasing with them, but time and money haven't worked on in my favour yet. I am planning a trip to chase with them for 2 weeks in 2010 though. Should be a blast.
