    Just got back from Nashville

We spent the week at Nashville for the 21st annual American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Scientific Session. Despite the "American" tag, there were in fact a fairly good sized portion of dentists from Australia, England, Sweden, Germany and Canada. Roughly 3500 people attended the 5 day event, which included the staff of the attending doctors. The name is a little misleading as the academy is actually about comprehensive blending of multiple disciplines (all specialties) coming together to provide the most comprehensive, ideal, cutting edge treatment while also providing the best esthetics possible. The best of the best were there. There is of course, a smile gallery competition-we were a little disappointed at only winning 2 golds, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals, but there is always next year. It was just amazing. We brought almost our entire staff (26 out of 33-it wasn't mandatory to attend for the staff, purely voluntary but we paid for those that wanted to go) and had a great time. Guess who was there speaking? Dr. Bill Dorfman from the hit TV show "Extreme Makeover". Of course we just had to get a picture

    Lionheart,

Glad to see you had a great time in Nashville. I've always wanted to go, not for necessairly dentistry, but for the music and the Predators Glad to know you enjoyed it!

It's a TV show where they select people whose lives could really benefit from a total cosmetic makeover, from plastic surgery, dental work and a physical fitness trainer. Dr. Dorfman is the dentist who was initially consulted for the show and continues to provide the cosmetic dentistry for the show, which unfortunately got cancelled for the next season on Friday. It is unfortunate, because the show has done more for showing the public what dentistry can do for people beyond filling cavities and pulling teeth, and what a difference re-constructing a person's dentition can do for a person's life, than any education and promoting dentists have been able to do for the last 50 years.

It was a great convention, but unfortunately the schedule was pretty tight and we didn't get to see much of Nashville itself. From 7am to 8am, breakfast, special guest speakers 8 to 9 (which included Dr. Dorfman, and Frank Abignale, the man played by Leonardo DiCaprio in "Catch me if you can"), lectures from 9 to 5 given by the leaders in cutting edge dentistry, browse the exhibition floors for products and services from 5 to 7, and then there were AACD sponsored social events in the evenings till 10, where you could network with best dentists in the world, the aspiring elite, and the best of the best. The nice part was that the food was all provided and it was really great food. The not so great part was that there was no time to explore Nashville without skipping an evening event. Overall, though, it was pretty awesome. Next year San Diego, then Atlanta, then New Orleans, then in 2009, Hawaii (oh yeah).

I think all you need it to be a dentist
and to pay the hefty registration fee, of course.

Thanks-your company made them ;) Did you notice the matcing Nicole Miller ties we're all wearing? They have a dentistry theme. Also notice the physical symmetry of the 4 partners. Ron and I are clean shaven, balding and wearing glasses. Craig and Dwight have hair on their heads and faces and have no eyewear.
