I've gone over to the dark side...

Sorta...

All the research I did on the Fuji S2 Pro and the Nikon D100 for my Mom, (she was going to give my Dad a Digi SLR for Christmas, but ended up not) ended up sparking a serious interest in the pits of my photographic soul. As a result, I am sorry to announce that I purchased a D100 today and it should arrive next Wednesday. Along with it, I got an extra battery and 2 Lexar 1GB CF cards.

I'll end up breaking in the camera on a trip to Zion National Park and Las Vegas over Presidents weekend (Feb 12-16). Assuming I get something worth sharing, I'll share some shots after I get back.

I have no intentions of completely giving up film cameras... I still love my N70 and FM2n and my Velvia and Provia!

LOL.. Ask me how I feel about them in a couple months and we'll see if I've changed my tune any. :P

I've also embraced the D100 and am extremely happy with the camera and the results it produces. That aside, I still carry the Contax G2 or Leica M6 everywhere I go, still prefer the film choices I like to make, still prefer the interaction and friendship with the girls at the pro lab I've used for the last 8 years. More and more models are looking for digital files/CDs, so the D100 serves me well, but I still cannot envision me giving up film. Enjoy the D100 ... it is an excellent tool.

No self-respecting Nikon user would ever utter the words "love" and "N70" in the same sentence. Unless, of course, they enjoy interface-induced brain anurisms... :D

You'll love the D100, mine have served me incredibly well.

I never understood the bum rap the N70 got.. I always thought the UI was intuitive and pretty damned easy to use. All it took was 10 minutes and a little reading and I was up and shooting.. I guess it was ahead of its time.. Or more likely.. I'm a freak! ;)

Up until I bought my Canon G-2, I was a point and shoot guy with one-hour developing at the drug store or wherever. That all changed with digital. I get a bang out of taking a RAW image from my Canon 10D through Capture One into Photoshop and then out through Qimage to my Epson 2200 printer! I love looking at the stunning 12x16 images I can produce! Me! An artist!

Nothing I post here comes close to having the impact that my prints have. I would never have the joy of photography without digital. Every time I first open an image transferred from my camera to my computer I am amazed at what the technology allows me to do.

Now my challence is composition!

Tell me more about "Qimage". Is that software that comes with the 2200? What exactly does it do? I've been looking at the 2200 since it was released and I may pick one up if I have some $$ left over from my tax return.

I picked up Nikon's Capture v4 this morning and it should arrive when my D100 does. I'll play with that and with PS7 (which ever version preceded CS) and decide from there which program I like better for working with RAW images.

I'm real close to picking up a 2200, too. A BIG chunk of change, but the way I look at it, six months of print sales will pay for it. Ah, the power to RATIONALIZE... :D

Qimage costs about $45.00. It is a printing program that is a little difficult to use, but gives you tremendous flexibility. It places images for you on your paper based on printed image size and paper size. For example, it will put three 4x6 or two 5x7's or one 8x10 on 8 1/2 x 11 paper with the click of a mouse. I use it to print nine 4 x6's or one 12x16 on 13 x 19 paper.

It also has tremendous interpolation algorithms that give you a clean way of increasing the size of your images without getting the jaggies.

It solves the problem of sharpening for different size images (4x6, 8x10, 12x16 etc). You designate the sharpening level in a filter and it applies the filter to the image before it is printed at the size you designate. You don't need to save different size images on your hard drive. Just the image and filter. Qimage does the rest

It has a unique 3D sharpening process that I really like. There are lots of threads in different discussion groups and forums about Qimage among serious digital printers. I have only seen positive comments (other than a steep learning curve when you get started).

The developer Michael Chaney, contacts you personally by e-mail if you need technical help.

Bottom line: I take my image out of Photoshop and into Qimage for printing and upsizing.
