Indianapolis Star photog Matt Detrich won the honors last week for the Top Domestic News Picture Story. The award is given by the National Press Photographers Association "The Best of Photojournalism 2006" international judging".
Matt is one of three Star photogs I know and he is well deserving of the award. He earned the award for his series on Qudrat the Afghanistan baby brought to Indy for heart surgery. He followed little Qudrat from the time he arrived in Greenfield until he returned to Afghanistan, flying back to Afghanistan with Qudrat and his father on a transport plane.

I was a bit surprised the Greenfield paper didn't get any recognition (that I have heard of at least) for the same story.
