Imperfect Macros

I feel a little sheepish about posting these. I know they don't measure up to some of the macros I've seen in here. But oh well.

Well, I didn't know what to expect! However, all things considered these are not bad. The 2nd image of the spider is pretty good - better than my attempts at macro or close-up!

Actually the butterflies are all in motion - so you're dealing with the motion as well as the attempt at macro. Butterflies are fast - and even when perched on a flower or whatever, they are in motion!

I couldn't have done as well as your 2nd spider....I've tried to do bugs. I would not attempt a spider because I don't let them get within 50 yards of me.....they won't live long enough!

ETA: just took a 2nd look....actually the first butterfly shot is also pretty good! I like the composition - with the flowers in the frame.

Don, you're an experienced photographer, so this may not help you much. But I've been taking pictures for several years and didn't know this until I read it the other day. There is a symbol on the case of almost every DSLR out there that looks something like this:

That symbol marks where the sensor plane is in relation to the camera's case. I understand that precise measurements can be critical in macros, so I thought I'd mention it here. Thanks for helping me get this out there.

Oh, and by the way, I like the pics. I haven't tried macros myself, so I'm not someone to judge, but they look like a good first effort.

Thanks Joe. These aren't really macros. They are action shots of small creatures. I had to crop a lot and I only have a 6.1 meg sensor, so they needed a lot of sharpening and are noisy. I am an eternal rank amateur and need all the help I can get (although I don't always take it).
