    I'm Getting Nothing For Christmas...
    Except a D300!!!!

    It was ordered today.

It is going to drive me crazy knowing it is under the tree, but the lovely and gracious Dawn is adamant that it is going to be wrapped up and put under the tree and I can not have it until Christmas morning.

    But I know it's on it's way!

Any chance that she will let you have the camera and wrap the box to keep under the tree?? Nahhh, I didn't think so either.

I know the feeling. It's a hard thing to see someone else get gear you want. I never thought I'd get a F5, but I got one. I never thought I'd get a D200, but I got one. I really thought the D300 would be obsolete before I could afford one, but it's on it's way.

Good things come to those that wait. I hope your wishes come true this Christmas.

BTW, B&H has some great deals on used D200's...

I can relate to the envy!

And I can really relate to the wife's comments. Mine is convinced that I've got to have the latest and greatest. I may want them, but I don't have to have them.

I looked at the D300's upgrades over the D200.

12.3 mp vs 10.2 mp. Nice, but not a must have.
D Active Lighting. Nice, but not a must have.
6 fps vs 5 fps. Big deal.
    Live view. So what?
920,000 pixel viewscreen vs 230,000 pixel. Nice, but not a must have.
Anti-dust system. Very nice, but not a must have.

So why upgrade? The incredible low light - high ISO capabilities. I shoot weddings (among other things) and the low light capabilities of the D300 are THE selling point for me. That one feature makes it worth the money in my book. And I can't wait to try it out.

Wish I could help you out with the wife situation. Have you tried: "But honey, my camera takes good pictures, but this new camera will let me take GREAT pictures?"

Surely you jest! How could she be so closed minded?

Actually, I have four, and the wife says I've got to sell the F5. So I guess four is my limit!

    Right. As if.

All things considered, I most certainly can NOT complain. She has been and continues to be VERY good to me!

I've been trying to save my money for a D300, and frankly, I thought it would be obsolete before I got the money saved up. But things worked out that Dawn asked me if I wanted to get the D300 this year, and what was I going to say? ;-)

Tell her that you NEED it beforehand so you can get used to using it. That way you'll be able to catch that sparkle in her eyes Christmas morning when she opens her gift. Do you have kids? You could throw something mushy in there about them too. :)

    It's Here...
My D300 is home, wrapped up in Christmas paper, waiting for me to open it on Christmas morning.

I tried to convince the lovely Dawn that I really should do a function test, just to verify that everything worked properly. After all, she wouldn't want me to open it on Christmas morning only to find it didn't work.

    She didn't go for it...

But it's here, waiting for my personal touch to make it do it's thing.

One little suggestion Robert. Even if the lovely Dawn is playing hardball with the D300 make sure and have a battery charged and waiting for it on Christmas morning. Don't waste two hours waiting for the battery to come up to speed. If you don't have a battery and charger that works with the D300 convince Dawn to unwrap it and pull them out and get it on the charger before Christmas.

Not a problem! I'm ahead of you here buddy.

The D300 takes the same battery as the D200, and I have four batteries for it.
On Christmas morning, I will put a freshly charged battery, a Lexar 4 gig, 300X CF card in it, and a lens on the body. I will be shooting about one minute after I open it!

But thank you so much for the suggestion. That was really insightful of you to think of that, and I appreciate you passing it on to me my friend!

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well, though I guess Christmas came early for you this year. ;-)

It actually is in this case!

I have wanted a D300 for some time now. I was saving my money for one and thought it would be next summer or fall before I could get it. So waiting until Christmas isn't nearly as bad as it would ordinarily be.

But my baby has made another wish come true for me. I am a blessed man!

Oh yeah, and chocolate is never a bad thing!

Don't you believe it! It is not a matter of patience at all. I have been saving up for this camera for months now. I figured it would be next summer or even the fall before I had the money to buy one. So getting it for Christmas is actually WAY earlier than I was expecting to get it.

And you are right, I drive home past some fishing boats every day. I've stopped one evening to take some sunset shots. But this time of year, the sun has already set when I get there, and I can't help but think "I could take this shot with a D300".

As for replacing it with my D200 in the box, my lovely wife is much too smart to fall for that! She claims she can't even figure out how to turn my camera on, but I guarantee you, she would notice in a second if I was shooting with the D300. She's a clever lady. She is incredibly sexy, but she's got brains to boot! Have I mentioned that I am a blessed man?

You are a lucky man Robert. Dawn is a special lady. I can imagine how hard it is to be patient. It's cool that you're getting it well before you expected to.

I read your comparison between the D200 and the D300 and got a kick out of your comments and the reason you'd really like to have it. I'm still shooting with my old Canon 1D mk1. The only reason I would like to upgrade is for the low light capability of the newer cameras.

Sounds like you're going to have a great Christmas, present-wise. I'm looking forward to seeing some of those low-light photos soon after you get it! :)

As for my comparisons, well, some things are more important than others. I wasn't looking to upgrade my D200 until I read and saw what the D300 could do in low light. THAT makes it worth upgrading. All the other upgrades are just the icing on the cake...
