I fell to the Dark Side

    I'm a little nervous. I hope my fall wasn't a big mistake.
I bought a Macbook Pro. EEEEK! for my wife's birthday. I also got a bunch of software for it (Office 2004 Professional, iLife 06, Thursby Dave, and Elements). Do I need antivirus? Aren't Macs supposed to be pretty virus impervious? I guess I can always order it later.
IF i find i like the Mac OS (and so far I like it from the little I've played with on my friends Macs), I'm going to be replacing my desktop with a G5, and getting my own laptop.

    DOOOOOOOD!!!!

    No mistake! Good idea

Here is one hint, get Camino. Safari is a good program, much better than IE to start with, but still it doesn't quite cut it. Mozilla just seems to have a better grip on what the people want and need.

    http://www.caminobrowser.org/

MS Office is a lot better on Mac for some reason, which leads me to believe that Micrshaft ought to go back to doing what they were always best at, making software for other OS's. Lets see, hmm turn the dashboard off, and set the dock to half size and auto hide, and you will love your apple forever and ever and ever and ever.

Nah, you just emerged from it into the light

I have no problem guaranteeing that you'll love the OS once you get used to it and will soon enough think "what the hell have I been doing all those years"

Good move. Macs rock, end of. Spotlight is very useful too - lets you search for any word in any document on your computer. Its incredibly useful when you have a memory like mine! Oh, and move your dock to the left handside - that's where the pros keep it ;)

Oh spotlight is a Godsend! I had it on my iMac which had Tiger, but I sold that to get a new camera. My iBook has panther which lacks spotlight, and man don't i miss it!

As long as you have office set so that it can't "call home" it should be fine. My cable modem has a built in firewall, and camino makes surfing ultra safe, so in my experience virus and spyware stuff isn't really important. Others may have other ideas, but you really gotta be doing some heavey P2P or seedy stuff to mess up a Mac.

Thanks everyone! It's encouraging to hear your input, especially since it's a done deal. I'm looking forward to setting up my wife's new Macbook when it gets here. I just hope it gets here in time for her birthday. I'll probably calling on some of you if I have trouble setting it up to network with the WindBlows machines on my home network.

Setting a Mac up to network with a pc is easy as 123, geting the pc to network with the Mac is a little more tricky, let me know if you need any help ;)

No virus or rootkit exists that can install itself on OS X without someone having admin access and coming in and installing it. That being said, a firewall is always a good idea, and antivirus is good in a multi-user environment where PC data is shared, as it can intercept Windows viruses and keep them from spreading.

Just remember not to turn on any network services (SSH, sharing) without understanding how they work and how to secure them. One of the reasons for OS X's great security is that by default it has no networking services enabled greatly reducing your exposure to the outside world.

If I had the money I'd get a mac as well. As for right now I'm happy with my iMac Rev. A circa 1998 runs Mac OS 9.2.3 rather well.

Mac has perfected speed and the no-crash policy, great for photography and Safari works fine, no need to waste spae on Hard Drive for Mozilla Firefox. If you can, get the Intel iMac, i know photoshop is only in rosetta right now but when adobe comes out with photoshop for the intel mac, it will kick ass

I just bought an iBook G4 a few weeks ago and man do I love it. I'll admit that OSX took a little getting used to, but I just love the ease of use with the computer. Now, if only I could find a copy of photoshop to use...

As has been said... welcome to the light

I've also got an ibook G4, the iBook's are really tough so you can take them wherever you take your camera.

It would be great to take it wherever I take the camera... but since I have a film camera, there's nothing that I can do with the laptop
