Hmm, maybe I found my niche?
These are pics of my niece who wants to model. So, I took her under my wing today and shot 90 pictures digitally - out of those there were 30 really good ones, these are my favorites, which I will list in this thread seperately. Let me know which you like or dislike and why! My first time really seriously shooting a kid (not literally! lol) I have my lil studio downstairs in my garage - I use a movie screen for background which I light up, then use a side light on her face, and flash.

    Here's the first:

All 3 are really cute, all 3 need to have your niece a little bit further away from the background...notice the shadows caused by the flash. Your lighting is bright and even, which can be good...next time try using a light to the side and a reflector on the other side to give more of a shape to her face. My favorite? #2...love the shy/sly/innocent/cute smile. Nice work.

Of these Janie #2 and #4 stood out to me the most.

You need to move the model away from the background about 4-6 feet to get the shadown dropping off and also blur the background.

When taking images, turn the head a little towards the light source so you can see only the jaw line and not the ear on one side.

Certainly a good start. What about putting the teeth back in the mouth, that would be a fun exercise as well.

2nd batch ... love the different looks. 1st one has a glamour feel to it, which some people may not like because she's looking older than she should. I like it, nevertheless. The 2nd one has the best lighting and best skin tones...there's nothing like natural light. looks like you had a sunny day, and you took this in the shade, which gives you wonderful colors. Again, the first one has her at 8 going on 18, the 2nd one has her 8 going on 8. Excellent series, Janie.

You were close! She just turned 7!!! My brother said he's going to lock her in the attic until she's 29! lol

Last two out doors have a red cast to the face, was she sunburnt by the way.

I like the second out door shot.

I'm a bit like that with both my girls, 8 going on 30 as well and the 11 year old, going on 21 already although not demanding which is great.

She's on a swim team so she has quite a sunny glow!

Thank you for your input! It was my first time using the indoor backdrop so I think it will take some getting used to. I also noticed while looking through my pictures that she kept moving back! lol I need to tape the floor so she knows where to stand.

It is hard with children, but you were successful enough to get them in focus which is the hardest thing for me with my children.

    7!!

I'd have never guessed 7. I was going to comment on the shadow, but that's already been mentioned. And it's hard to decide which one I like best, they are all pretty different. Going to go with the last one though, I think that one makes her look closest to her age, especially with the missing tooth. My oldest has some loose ones, I can't wait!
