High ISO Anyone?

OK, so I'll start from the low end of the high and work my way up...

Everything I post will be uncropped (unless otherwise noted) so that the effect of noise will not appear exaggerated. All EXIF data intact.

These three all at ISO 800 with the Canon 5D. The first two with flash.

On #1, since I almost always expose for the background (ambient) when using strobes, I needed a high ISO to maintain the shutter speed necessary to handhold a 180mm macro while maintaining the f/11 for the DOF I was looking for. The flash was only for fill.

On #2, although the strobe is the main light source, I needed the high ISO to bring up the lights of the strand.

Still OK for posting at these sizes, the first three at ISO 1250 and the last one ISO 1600.

#1 - Canon 40D, no flash, high SS required to freeze the proboscis (indoor, natural light)

#2 & #3 - Canon 5D. #3 has been cropped slightly to elimate the perspective distortion and slight tilt that comes from walking and shooting :p

#4 - Canon 50D at ISO 1600.

I never dreamed of trying it before, but I did give ISO 3200 a few tries...

Both of these with the 50D.

And yes, both situations were dark! That second one (don't know exactly what they were doing) was 1/60s at wide open (f/2.8) at ISO 3200...I couldn't see the ones running around between me and the backlit ones.

I don't think I have much at ISO 6400 :rolleyes:


I imagine the other manufacturers/models are showing similar noise characteristics. What a great time to be shooting :)
