    Hawaii...Velvia Sunsets

I've shot digital for the past three months that I haven't had a chance to get my film developed. So having just received my film from the lab, I put these two slides into the scanner.

It's hard to give this film up....my entire learning curve was built on Velvia.

This was taken at the Keahou Bay in Kona, Hawaii.

Great stuff, really like that second one too.

I'm curious - in a situation like that I'd spot meter off the sky, probably at +1-1/3 just above the horizon. How did you do it?

I love these photos...I spent 3 years in Hawaii and the sunrises and sunsets remain with me today. I love the color in these...they are so vibrant, it's like I was back there standing on my lanai looking out over the ocean. Beautiful work.

    Hey Steve,

What I do is use my hand held meter to get an exposure for the ground and set my camera up for that setting. Then I meter the sky to get an exposure which should be +2 to +4 stops above. Using a grad nd filter is the next step.

In this case the was barely +2 stops above the ground, so I used a one stop grad nd filter. The shot with the lounge chairs was just an ambient meter without a filter.

I've gotten way better results using the ground as the base exposure and then filtering the sky to bring it back into the range of the film.

Wonderful images Loren. When I was in this Hawaii the sunset images I came home with were some of the best and the ones that still remind me the most of the beauty of the state. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Great sunset shots. I LOVE Hawaii. Only been there twice, but I could vacation there every year given the chance. I know what you mean about Velvia. The only film I shot more than Velvia was the original Fujichrome 50, which as I recall, they stopped making a short time after Velvia came out. I still try to emulate Velvia in my post processing, but it's not the same, and the Fred Miranda Velvia vision plug-in is WAY over the top with its effects.

    Hey there...

When I posted I thought of you since you are the Velvia and slide film queen. Thanks for the comments and you should go on vacation, everybody is doing it.

There is a program by Tony Chien that also alters the tone and color of an image to make it appear as if it was shot on Velvia. It's called Digital Film.

I've never actually shot on Velvia when I did have a film camera (didn't even know it existed back then), so I don't know how accurate it is.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking along the lines of not using an ND grad, getting the sky how I wanted it, and letting everything else fall where it would based on the latitude of the film. Good idea!
