Looks like Santa will be bringing an Epson this year since I would basically have to sell my Mamiya to buy the scanner capable of scanning its film! I am content with a quality scanner capable of putting my slides and 120 up here for you all to see.

For my next camera I'm looking at... brace yourself.... LARGE FORMAT to get the kind of shots I see in magazines like <i>Arizona Highways</i>. Absolutely incredible photography there imo. And large format gives you greater depth of field since you can tilt the film plane to mirror the landscape you're looking at. I may just skip the DSLR genre altogether!

Update and a question:

So now I am in love with the Epson 4990 which as stated before Ken Rockwell thought highly of and sounds like just the ticket. I can scan 35mm, 120, <i>and</i> in the future when I go large I will be able to scan 4x5 and 8x10 with it as well. How killer is that? The image quality is reported to be close to dedicated film scanners.

My question:
Who here owns the 4990? There are two versions, the Pro and the Photo. The Pro comes with additional software. I am wondering, is the extra $100+ worth it for the Pro. Any comments appreciated.

Rick, I have the 4870 pro. I think that the main difference is that it has Silverfast software which is more controlable than epson software. Also monaco easycolor software for calibration. The silverfast software is an advanced pro version.
I havent used silverfast and I can't get the moniter calibration to work on my computer.
IMHO your saving $1200 instead of $1300, so go for it.
I recall that I read an article in Shutterbug online and they were very impressed with the silverfast software. That was in their review of the 4870.

EDIT. To be more clear, The pro version is the same as the photo version. Plus it has some additional software that you can load and use if you want to. And as I recall The Shutterbug article praised the silverfast software.
