    Glossy or Matte Photo Paper

What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

    What do you use

I'll be printing borderless from a Canon IP3000.

I use matte, because glossy reminds me of wal-mart. Also, glossy picks up finger prints really easily.

Ever since I started using Mpix, I have gone with the matte finish. I have always gone with glossy when getting prints made locally, but after seeing the matte finish, I prefer it over the glossy. As far as advantages and disadvantages, I don't really know. Go with whatever you like best.

Glossy shows fine detail sharper than matte, but it will pick up finger prints like Adina says. I usually go for matte unless I have a reason for gloss - like Kodak Metallic paper that Mpix offers.

    For those very reasons!
For what it is worth, the likes of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston first started out using matte and similiar finishes, but ultimatley used glossy.

For traditional prints I usuallu go with matte, though if the film is really grainy glossy does bring out more detail. The 'glossy looks cheap' theory, I think, has more to do with having your prints done at a one hour place than the actual paper. Have a good custom glossy print and see the difference. For B&W I still go matte.

For inkjet prints, I've had better results with glossy than pearl.

I have an epson R800 and the glossy prints that I get from scanned slides look as good or better than if I have them printed at the lab. The glossy prints come out of the printer dry!
I dont know about the cannon. Smearing wet ink on glossy paper is one hazzard I can think of.
I have also made some prints for a friend on Burlington Print Works paper ($7.50 for 50 sheets) That she has framed and i cant tell wether its glossy or mat behind the glass.
Some of the prints that I have made that were difficult to get right looked to me and my friends better on matt paper. ( deeper, less muddy black as I recall).
If your going to print 5x7 and smaller, and not frame it, then I would suggest glossy because they will be viewed very close and fine detail may be obscurred. You'll just have to live with the fingerprints.
If your printing 5x7 and larger and putting it behind glass, I suggest matt.
The printer you are going to use has such fine detail that you may be happy printing 2x3 wallets on matt paper.
The choice is personal preference, so your gonna have to try em both anyway, and I am most interested in what you like best!
    Mark.
    P.S.
Every time I go to my freinds house I have to look at the pictures I gave her and remind myself that I took them & printed them. It's still hard for me to believe!

    Matte.

It isn't even close. Glossy may make the colors pop a little better, but for me, it's matte all the way. I love the way a photo looks on matte paper. You asked, I told you. ;-)
