Get Out Your Cameras and Telephoto Lenses
    From Space Weather.com:

"BIG FULL MOON: This Friday's full Moon is the biggest full Moon of the year. It is a "perigee Moon," as much as 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons we've seen earlier in 2008."

So get out your camera, your telephoto lens, your tripod, and find a scenic setting.
The full moon is this Friday, the 12th. Since the moon is actually at "full" at 11:37 am on the 12th, you can shoot it on the 11th as well since it will be practically as full then as it will be on the 12th.

As a bonus, the sun just let loose a a coronal mass ejection or "CME", so for those in the northern lattitudes, you could get arouras as well on the 11th and 12th. The solar wind blows at about 1,000,000 miles per hour, so it takes about four days to get to us.

For those curious about how to shoot the moon, use manual mode and the sunny f 16 rule as a starting point.

For instance, ISO 100 and f 16, use 125th of a second. Or f 11 at 250th of a second. Or f 8 at 500th of a second. And to be on the safe side, brackett. I usually shoot f8 and vary my exposures between 250th and 500th of a second.

Good shooting and I want to see some of those photo's.

No problem James. I try to let my friends on PR know when something special is going on, be it conjunctions, eclipses, or really big full moons.

I try to carry my camera with me most of the time. I've caught some nice shots that way.
So carry your camera with you tomorrow. :-D
BTW, I've got my tripod in my car today, just in case I get a shot...

Hopefully the weather will cooperate around here as well. Haven't shot the moon lately, other than when playing "Hearts" on the computer... ;)

Will try with a good 200mm tonight, with and without a cheap 1.4x TC. And, if all goes well, will shoot again with a yet to be determined new/used 400mm, with and without the TC tomorrow night if the postal service cooperates...

Looking forward to seeing everyone's shots...

    Here's A Cool Link
That shows the difference in the size of the moon as it orbits the earth.

And this is a great time to do night shots by moonlight.

    Thanks James,

This was shot with the Sigma 170-500mm with a Quantaray 2x TC. Settings were ISO 250, f/16 & 1/15 sec.

So that would put you around a 1000mm lens? Sweet.
Make me almost ashamed to post this small 300mm with a 2x TC ISO 100 f/5.6 1/125 sec.

The first image was right off the card

The Second one was fixed to my best abilities.

Yup, but I really loose a lot of image quality with my cheap TC. If you figure in the crop factor, I have the field of view equal to 1600mm on a 35mm film camera.

OK, I tried but this is the best I could do, a day late too. Used a 1.7x converter with a 70-200mm f2.8 both Nikon on a D300, using tripod and remote, 2 sec delay. f8 at 1/320s, ISO - LO.3.

Man, it wasn't looking good at all @ 5pm with a thick layer of cotton candy clouds, but the wind kicked up and cleared it out :)

    Tamron 100-300 in macro mode (300mm) f/16 1/90 on the modo tripod w/ 2sec delay white-balance Daytime.
    Cropped to 600x800, Unsharp Mask 1.5r / 56str. / 2clp.

Thanks for the heads-up on a starting point for the settings Speed, this one is a touch dark but the 1/125 was right on the numbers
