Welcome Dan. You might want to post this in the Canon forum too. What lens are you using now? I would suggest to do some Internet searching on composition and the rule of thirds. Hanging out in the critique forum will help too.

I can't help you out on the lens but if you want some suggestions on places to see while you are there I can help with that, Jeff

    Dan,

I have rented from Lens Rentals a few times and will be again next month for a trip. They are fast and I've never had any problems, their prices are on par with other places also.

As far as lens recommendations, animals as in wild or zoo?

Well if you're shooting wildlife, both in a zoo or in their natural habitat, I would suggest something like the 70-200 f/2.8 IS and if possible add in a teleconverter as well.

I would recommend two zooms, 18mm to 50 or 70 and the second 50 or 70 to 200 or 300mm. and a tripod.

The wide angle lens is useful for landscapes the telephoto is good for animals.

If you wish to do night/evening shots you will need fast glass F2.8 or faster. The 50mm F2, 1.8 or 1.4 and if you can find it the F.9 but remember with open lenses you need to understand DOF, and it can be an issue with Telephoto lenses also. There are many FREE iPhone or Android Apps or online which will give you the DOF for a lens by entering the length of the lens, the focus distance, and F-stop.
