    The fun has begun... :-(

The last few weeks my wife and I have been tearing out the old drywall in the bath that we're remodeling. What a monster of a job! I knew it would be tough, but did my wife listen? Noooooooo. LOL.

Well, here's what was hiding undereath nearly 2" of plaster and sheetrock.I can't believe what an okie job the previous owner did. I put the window in last week and built up the frame, and even though I'm not much of a carpenter it turned out perfectly level.

Re: The fun has begun... :-(

Thanks Eric. But we're still not done tearing down. The ceiling needs to come down as well. That's gonna be real fun cuz I get to go up in the attic and move all the old insulation to one side. Whoopee!

Now, you might wonder why there's a huge gaping hole under the window. That's because the previous owner, whenever it was that he remodeled the bathroom, cut a hole in the side of the house and installed a 29"x29" window, and then built tile (poorly, I might add) around it for the tub. Well, after 30 or so years that tile cracked at the window sill, water got inside, and now I'm left to fix the damage. So, I went back to a regular sized bath window and will stucco the outside once I'm done with the inside.

If that's not enough, I now see I need a new tub too. I'm beginning to see why they say the bathroom is the most expensive and laborious portion of the house to remodel!!

Bathrooms just suck .... besides all the plumbing work to be done in them ... they are usually small and cramped ... most of the work is a 1 man job ... you got a great start ...

looks like you will have your free time taken up for quite some time ......

I believe you had the thread that your wife said you could spend the "extra money on that new camera you wanted" ?????
but "you" opened your mouth and said that the bathroom needs to be redone ...... :mad2:

well now look what you did .... you could be out enjoying that 30d instead of remodeling a bathroom

    John,

My sympathy. You just put me off a new bathroom that Helen wants

Why have you got three taps and pipes going to the faucet to the bath? One Hot, One Cold, what is the other for? Perhaps its a good Idea that I leave the pluming alone.

    Try the kitchen.

We are coming up on two years. Granted, there were some setbacks. For example, while in the middle of the kitchen, while dh was in Europe for two weeks, the roof started leaking. Had the roof guys out, they said because we had dormers, they'd need to take the siding off of them. So the roof guys came out. The the window and siding guys came out, in the middle of all this, the floor guys were here. We went down to the original wood on everything but the living room. This was all in July of last year. Then, back to the kitchen, new cabinets, counters, sink, and oh yeah, walls.

Last piece of drywall went up this past weekend. So a month shy of two years, and about 50 thousand dollars later...our kitchen is almost finished.

    Adina, and John,

My heart goes out to you.

Thanks - you have definately put me off until I can afford to pay someone to do it and also go on holiday while their doing it

Perhaps getting that 39' boat sounds a much better deal and would cost about the same.

Yep it's the diverter valve. I replaced a couple of those before I got smart and went to the newer one handle design.

O dear Lord, 50K??? It had better look like the queen's kitchen when it's done, lol.

I guess I haven't much to complain about. To be truthful, we'll be actually spending less than $2000 on the bathroom. The pipes are in good shape, so don't have to worry about that...good thing too, because we have a concrete foundation.

The rest is just drywall and fixtures...I hope.

I remember thinking that too... I've finally come to the point where I think the "old house charm" is totally over rated. Our bathroom had to be put on hold half-way done because we killed the budget fixing stuff we didn't know about that was hidden inside the walls.

One fun discovery was the stairs that go over the top of the shower. I think this room used to be a downstairs bedroom because it's a huge bathroom for a 1925 house. When the previous owner (or before them) turned it into a bathroom, they just knocked all the support from underneath the stairs. We always knew they were a little bouncy but didn't know how bad it really was! So, half a forest worth of 2x4's later, that was fixed and didn't make the opening any smaller so no problems. Then there was the porcelain tile my wife picked out for the shower. Stay far away from that stuff...

    Awesome!

My wife and I recently decided to finish our unfinished basement. Plans are to build one half into a home theater and leave the other half for our bar. Having never done anything like this before it's been a lot of reading so far but just his past weekend I started putting up the walls. I'm looking forward to all the challenges the low ceiling and ventilation are gonna give me

    Wink Better You Than Me!

    I feel your pain buddy!

And now that you've taken it apart, this is the time to replace that plumbing with PVC. Another headache you don't need, but better now than later.

Hope it all goes as well as the window buddy!

Be careful, there have been some electrical code changes due to some people trying to save money by using cheap speaker wire (small gauge) with a very powerful amplifiers which of course melted the copper wire and burned down their house.

Re: The fun has begun... :-(

Here's a picture I took when we first moved in. Lovely early 70s decor, eh? Two layers of wallpaper had to come off, of course. Then, the hardest part was removing the 1" concrete-like buildup behind the tile in the tub area, which of course was laid over the near 2" of sheetrock and plaster and wire.

The red arrows are where the old tile had cracked around the window and, naturally, water from the shower seeped in. I replaced the moldy 2x4s before replacing this window with the one you see in the first picture.

Looking at this morning, I decided rather than replace the tub why not just a standup shower? After all, this is a hall or guest bathroom. Those using it won't need a tub. That would give me room on the left side of the window wall for a nice towel and bath supply rack, and perhaps a quaint bathroom chair.

I don't recall if I've ever posted before/after photos of our living room, but I figured I might as well show you the amount of work I've had to do since we bought this house.

As you can see, the previous tenants were raider fans. Yes, that's right, gray walls with black trim. They even got started on the raider insignia! I don't even want to talk about the master bedroom...let's just say someone had a fondness for blood red walls but now it's a nice light violet color.

The laminate flooring I laid myself, which took around 16 hrs. but was well worth the time spent (along with the knee and back pain too!). Please don't mind our bare walls...they'll soon be filled with some pictures I've taken.

Besides, the last time I had a beer was...er....when was that? 1986 I think. I prefer pepsi now.

Although, I did try the non-alcholic beer once. Forgot the name but I think it was German. Taste the same but without all the side effects, LOL.
