    Suggestions for a famous photographer?

My daughter has to do a school project for art on a famous photographer of her own choice. It has to be someone that used/uses colour in an interesting way. Any suggestions???

Does this person have to be Danish? If not, she might want to look at Freeman Patterson, who is a famous Canadian landscape photographer. There are, of course, many others to choose from. HTH.

    Cheers,

No, there's no nationality requirements at all. My daughter is half English and has lived most of her life abroad, so she is attending an international school. The only requirement is the one about using colour in an interesting way. My problem is that I only know Ansel Adams and David Bailey (and Loupey ).

How famous does he/she have to be?
Gary Heller, who moderates the Critique Forum here on PR uses colour in a very subtle and interesting way.

No disrespect to Gary at all, I think his stuff is great but I think it has be someone more famous, ie. her art teacher is likely to have heard of him/her and they can be found on Wikipedia and such places. She's only 13, so I guess there's going to more internet research more than personal analysis. Who's the Matisse and Picasso of photography???

How about Eliot Porter? He was one of the first landscape photographers to make color photography "acceptable" in the art world.

A little bit, but he was (obviously) not well known for it. I can't recall any of those images offhand. Here are a couple that are/were known for working with color:

    Pete Turner
    Galen Rowell
    Jay Maisel

Re: Suggestions for a famous photographer?

Frans Lanting, Bob Krist, Art Wolfe, Michael Fatali, Steve McCurry, Thomas Mangelsen, Troy Paiva, (I don't know how famous Troy is. I found his site in my bookmarks.)

Scott Kelby Scott is know more for being a Photoshop guy and educator than he is a photographer. That being said, he was recently featured in Nikon World magazine for his photography and his use of color.

These guys are all pretty contemporary so I don't know if they are what you're looking for. They are not the "old school" masters you will find in a history of photography book. At least not yet.

If I was asked by my daughter (24 now) to help her pic a famous photographer I would suggest a female artist in hopes it would inspire her to explore her own artistic talents.

    Two suggestions

Jan Groover - wonderful still life-ist (?!) - her color work is wonderful - And Sandy Skoglund. While Skoglund is probably way out of fashion these days, her color is remarkable.

I'll second Thomas Mangelsen, breathtaking views.

Thank you all for your input She read this thread and looked at lots and lots of photos and in the end decided on Frans Lanting. She did her oral presentation today and it apparently went quite well! She says "Hi and thanks everyone " ....
