First outing with 7D

I finally had a chance to take some shots with the new 7D today. My two nieces were swimming in the states at B.Y.U. Last year they made me a little faux "Judge High photographer" badge witch got me onto the floor instead of up in the stands. I wisley kept it in my camera bag and it did the job for me again today. So did the new body. I haven't really fiddeled around with the settings yet, just pretended it was my film body and went for it. All four of these were shot in manual mode f4, 1/400 sec. 3200 ISO. Minimal PP, just resize and a little sharpening. So far so good.......now back to taking pictures of beer and shots......mmmmmmmm :p ,

I think the third image is your best one. I like the reflection. It seems a little soft though.

I love the action shots, but wonder if you could have gone with a lower iso to eliminate some of the grain(or could be my screen)

f/4 1/400 sec and 3200 ISO? It must not have been pretty well lit.

I guess this was pretty even fluorescent light, typical of indoor pools.
Looks good for 3200 ISO, noise looke bearable - like the Canon 20D.
#3 is defnintely the best of the bunch.
The contrast between the still and rough water, the reflection, the fact you can see the lane underneath in the tiles on the pool bottom - very good. Doesn't look like you used a polariser either.

What stroke is she swimming? Looks like breast stroke to get her head & shoulders that high.
My breast stroke action never lifted me that high, but then I never raced, not quite fast enough for specialist breast stroke, and for some reason never mastered crawl :(

Your timing on the crawl stroke is good for seeing the faces (that's the point, they're your nieces!) but from the action point of view I'd like to see the arm coming over, or even entering the water.

Thanx for all your comments! To answer a few: Yes it was horrible lighting. Very dark. What light there was, was a mix of flourescent, daylight, and mercury vapor light. Here's were the digital techno aspect of it blows my mind: I don't know if all digitals do this or not (maybe I never read that far into the manuals of my other two digitals I've owned :rolleyes: ) This camera you can manually calibrate the white balance for any given light by pointing it a something pure white, basically just like metering off a grey card. Better than using the presets that are available. Seemed to work pretty good.
Wombat, yes it's the breast stroke. Here's one for you with the arm coming over. I didn't post originally because I don't know the kid. Yeah the noise isn't too bad really. I was using 400 ISO film 10 years ago (pre-second generation Superia) that looked worse than these.
Gimper, do not adjust your set. It is noise. Last year I used 400 speed film and needed flash. They said I could use flash except at the start, but I was the only one using flash and felt like a d!ck, so this year I thought I'd behave.
