Finally seduced by the digital side...
Well, it had to happen! I've been shooting using a little Yashica T4-Zoom compact, and although it has given me some good results I've been getting increasingly frustrated by not being able to have any real control over settings. Also, although I Iiked the excitement of picking up a roll of developed film and not quite knowing what I'd be getting, I couldn't help counting the cost of my many failures!
I treated myself to a Sony DSC V3 yesterday. 7.2 megapixels, small enough to slip in a jacket pocket, and I can finally start really learning about the effect of aperture and shutter speeds without wasting roll after roll of film. It feels solidly built, and the controls are user friendly. Playing with it last night I'm already amazed by the detail it captures, and I'm hoping it will spur me on to take more shots and more risks without an eye on cost to hold me back.
Unfortunately my access to a computer to upload the shots is sporadic, so it may be a while before I can put anything online, but you can be sure I'll post something as soon as I can. Meanwhile, looking forward to a weekend in Cambridge to play with it. Aren't new toys great!

Poor man! ;-)
Congratulations on your new toy! Like you, I was frustrated with the lack of control on the P&S we had. It was wonderful getting my first SLR. (I now have three.) :-)
Enjoy your new camera, and definitely post some of those shots when you can.

Welcome to the 21st century! You will find that the number of photos you take will explode and your skills will improve by leaps and bounds. Don't forget to post some things when you get to a computer. By the way, many places can move those images off the card to a CD and also print whatever you want without you having to have a computer nearby.

Very true, ever since I've had a digital it's much easier to just go shoot, and try to find stuff to shoot, when I couldn't really afford to do that with film. It has it's pitfalls, but what doesn't!?!?
Congrats,
Jared

Re: Finally seduced by the digital side...
Thanks for the encouragement! Michael, you were certainly right about the number of photos I take exploding! The first few days were torture though, I was waiting for a 512mb memory stick to turn up, and had to make do with a friend's 32mb in the meantime. I kept filling it up, and having to umm and ahh about what to delete every time I came across something else I wanted to try.
Anyway, I'll post things in the critique forum, but just for here I'll include a classic Cambridge shot (poor weather though so lighting is rather flat) and a shot I took of the London skyline, which involved freezing my bits off at midnight :-)
