    Sixteenth Century Boat Building

As shot with cropping at the top. The high gate is the port entrance of Fort Louisburg, sixteenth century French fort surrounding a large rebuilt French village. The fellow in the photo is putting the finishing touches on a boat totally reconstructed using 16th century tools.

I agree with Rick, it's a great shot. I like the overcast sky - it gives the shot a moody look. Sort of a reminder of how dangerous sea travel was in the 16th century.

Thanks, Rick and Speed. As to the overcast sky, the remains of a hurricane hit the area, as I was leaving.

Very sleek dreamy shot....smooth is the only word that came to mind really...you can feel the textures involved without really having to...great compostion...

    Hey Ron,

Just curious, given your passion for the rules of photography, do you hold this up as an example of rule conformity or rule derision?

    Thanks,
    Rick

Boy, Rick, talk about a loaded question! Actually I don't hold this up as an example of anything, but it probably conforms to most of the rules....as in a mood created by the sky that relates to the dangers of boating on the ocean, strong diagonals, perspective and depth created by the placement of the boat, worker, field, gate and sky, a strong vertical that matches the colour of the boat and the green field, the sides of the boat that lead into the photo toward the worker etc. The angle at which the shot was taken also strengthens some compositional elements which would be weaknesses in a flat, straight-on shot.
