Desperately needing a change...

You ever find yourself in a situation where you just NEED a change?? After all the stress of switching camera brands and the simlutaneous developments in the photographic life, I am just burned out on the SLR. A damn shame considering how new this stuff is to me, but outside of work I find it difficult to "see" with it. I ordered a P&S as backup and I can not wait for the stupid thing to get here just so I can go out and snap away without the pressure of living up to the quality of the SLR. But most of all, I can't wait for the freedom of the LCD screen...to me framing with one is so different, right now it would be nothing less than liberating.

Hasn't Megan convinced you to get a Holga yet?? Heh. That's my break right there. The insert on mine is gone, so it only shoots square. Vertical or horizontal framing? Doesn't matter! Is the focus perfect? Doesn't matter! Is that some dust on the lens? Who cares?! Enjoy your new camera. :)

I have a Kiev 6x6, no meter and the shutter sticks, does that count? :D

The thing is...I really don't like shooting film. Especially medium format, I have no scanner for it, I don't want to deal with a lab printing it...I just don't like giving up that control.

I am more likely to shoot 35mm B&W since I can develop that at home and then just run it through my scanner.

dude get out those binos and chase nature!!!!!! who cares if you get crappy images... the thrill of the hunt is what counts !!!!!

I have the Kyocera T4-Zoom with a Carl-Zeiss lens. The camera is pure quality, it's light, and very intuitive to shoot. I also still have my Nikon 35mm fixed lense p&s rangefinder and it's very easy to shoot as well. The good thing with 35mm film p&s cameras is if you get the shot of a lifetime, you can still scan it print size. Something you cannot do with ease on a digital point and shoot.

Going out without a slr is a good change. Have fun.

No, I only owned two P&S digitals, the Fuji 1300 years ago, and a Sony F717. Hated the Fuji, gave it to my mom, sold the 717 in favor fo a DSLR.

I ordered the G5. Couldn't find a G3, or I would have gotten that instead. The ETTL hot shoe, the same battery as the 10D and the CF cards it uses make it a smaller investment than other cameras as far as accessories. ANd it can be a legitimate backup for my on-site portrait stuff if the 10D were to crap out. It could even be used for other things with the 550ex, So, good buy overall. Money is coming in steadily, so hopefully there is a Mark II in my future, at which point the 10D will be the backup and the G5 will just be there to carry around with me. :D

I wish I could have gotten a G3 though, couldn't find one new anywhere...

I've heard it said that if you can make a living doing what you love to do, then you'll never work a day in your life. Not exactly true, since those fortunate enough to make a living doing what they love, are often motivated, driven, compelled (pick an adjective), to excell at what they do. But it's a labor of love.

Maybe you just need a vacation buddy! My college buddies and I had so much fun in the mountains back in October, we decided to do it every year - twice a year when we can! So...I'm taking April 30th off, and heading to the mountains with my buddies. We're planning on taking day landscapes, night landscapes, maybe some waterfalls, and anything we happen to find interesting. Are you free the first weekend in May? ;-)

OK, you mentioned Mrytle Beach around Labor Day. I'm tied up that Saturday, but Dawn says we'll go down and get a motel. Let me know if that one works out. Myrtle Beach is only 2.5 hours away. Easy day trip!

In fact, the wife and I are making our seventh yearly trip there this month! 18th - 25th.

You know,it does seem sad, but in the matter of one weekend, starting on Friday, I had to sell all my Nikon stuff which I knew like the back of my hand, buy a new camera, find a local place with the lens I needed, learn it all, set it up for my workflow, and use it the following Monday for a paid shoot. Once you get as familiar with a system as I was with the Nikons, switching over in such a short time really is a lot harder than it would seem.

But I do also go through these times where I just get sick of taking pictures in the same way. Sometimes it's just a matter of suing a different lens, sometimes it's a matter of using a wholly different camera. I guess my attention span is shorter than I'd like it to be. :)

But I didn't realize it happened that quick! One weekend? Geez, no wonder you feel overwhelmed. That is total system overload. You definitely need a break! Don't do this to yourself again. Machocist!

It wasn't planned. I got the 50mm f/1.8 on Wednesday, bought the 10D on Friday and put up the Nikon stuff for sale. Within hours I had almost twenty offers to buy, but the first one that responded wanted it all, the entire package. And he wanted it shipped on Monday. I couldn't pass up a deal like that, and that's why it was all such a rush. I was planning on spending some time with the Canon, learning it before the Nikon stuff would sell, and then adding the lenses I needed. I was caught off guard by that guy's offer...

I know what you mean, I've peaked a bit in my photogaphy and find lately that when I get a roll of 36 developed, sometimes I throw them all in the trash can. Digital seemed like the answer and I had set aside the money for a D70, but in the end I upgraded my golf clubs instead.

It was a bit of a shock to me when I realized that that was what I wanted to do, having been really photo focused for about five years. Right now, I feel keenly aware of my limitations as a photographer and my limitations in equipment. The passion will come back, I think, but right now I'm on hiatus.

Might I suggest taking a small vacation, maybe just a weekend trip... and just using a point and shoot to take some pictures. Don't go somewhere you'll never go again, otherwise you might regret not taking the slr, but go somewhere close and just use a simple point and shoot. When I first started getting into professional photography, using my nikon slr's, I promised myself that I wouldn't stop taking snapshots with my point and shoot, particularly on vacations... you take pictures for a living, not everyone gets to live a dream like that... but everyone needs a break now and then.

I'm actually glad I saw these posts... I've been getting a bit burned out lately due to some repetitive work for a company, and when I saw the post about the holga I was intrigued, so I checked it out and ordered one. It's a great way to simply express the more artistic side of photography... and I never have to worry whether or not the f-stop and shutter speed are set correctly. *smile*

And I don't blame you. If someone wanted it all, it was smart to sell it to him. Keeps it from dragging on for months trying to sell bits and pieces.
