Day at the park
Armed with my 400mm f5.6L, and 70-200 f2.8L, went to the park with my wife and children to play. :D

Re: Day at the park
Crop #3 so it is just the upper half, with the eyes. I like the fact that you were able to get those wonderful, unobtrusive portraits. I find that subjects are much better when they are not directing their attention at the camera, especially people. The "human" moment. Very nice.

Re: Day at the park
These are really good, better than the ones you posted at Xmas. I especially like the last one best, would be nice to get a little more light in the eyes but that would be difficult from the position you were probably taking the photos from.
The crops with your daughter show she is looking at something and looking at the image, I also want to see what she is looking at. Love the concentration she has as well.
Who is the third image of, is this one of your children, I thought you only had the two ? Not sure cropping leaving just the eyes there is the way to go.

Re: Day at the park
Third one is some one else's progeny. It was just one of those must capture moments.

Re: Day at the park
I thought as much after looking at the other park photos you posted.

jelous of your ability to distance yourself...it is sooo needed with kids to get the fun shots. great grabs

Nice!
I like the way you captured the fun along with the images. I agree that photos of kids when they aren't "posed" are great. These are full of life and fun. I don't find a favorite as each one is unique.

I'm finding myself using my 70-200 f2.8L less and less these days when shooting my photographs of people in general, and my children in particular. I really am beginning to love my 400 f5.6L. It's razor sharp, VERY light, and gets me far enough from the action to get good candid portraits. The only thing is the color of the lens. Sooner or later people notice the white monster lens and come over to chat gear talk. Or maybe they're just checking me out to make sure I'm not some weirdo with a camera. ;)
My other favorite lens is the 135 f2L. I'm finding myself shooting mostly with primes these days. Must be getting old, I'm turning into my dad (he always pooh poohed zooms, and advocated prime lenses-heck of a photographer my dad, didn't bother with light meters or camera meters, pure manual, calibrated eyeball exposure with slide film no less :D )

Thanks Liz. I find children easier to photograph with a long lens. Actually, kids seem easier to photograph anyway, since they ignore me and my camera for the most part. Adults always eyeball me suspiciously when they see me with a camera and a big lens, until I strike up a conversation with them (easy enough to do using my white monster lenses as a conversation piece) , or they see me with my children and write me off as one of those nutsy dads with camera-itus, or even an Asian tourist with camera.
