A day in the desert

Took some time today to go out and relax with a friend and do some prospecting for gold in Goler Gulch, Mojave desert. We didn't find any gold but at least I came home with a few pictures.

#1 My friend Randy up against some colorful mountains metal detecting at Nugget Flats.
#2 A 1930's era cabin and windmill at the mouth of Goler Gulch.
#3 An old "a-frame" just above the "living ghost town" named Randsburg. They used these rigs to lower miners straight down into the shafts. Just a tad too claustrophobic for me.
#4 Some old buildings in Randsburg get new faces. We always drive into this town after we get done prospecting to drink down an old-fashioned rootbeer float before heading home.

Hi Nat,

I don't know about building a house there...temperatures can get up to a sweltering 108 to 110 degrees during summer, and in winter it gets cold and VERY windy. Duststorms are not uncommon and neither are flash floods. I suppose that is why not too many people live out there as it is. Fall and spring are the best times to go out there as the weather is just perfect. Temperature was 80 degrees yesterday, just right for playing in the dirt. :)

Great desert pictures! (Exscuse the newbie, please!) I think that they might even be better in b&w. But, on the other hand, your pictures exhibit one of the great things found in good color photographs: a limited range of tones. Great photos!

Thank you, Dzerzhinski. I'm glad someone appreciates the desert like I do! My wife and I will be taking a trip to Sedona, AZ at the end of this month. It should be beautiful this time of year, what with all the leaves changing colors and everything. I hope to get some decent photos and share them on the forum.

Ray, these are great. I just love the first one with that sky and the mountains. It's just perfectly set up and perfect shot and also perfectly framed. I don't usually go for these kind of framing techniques, but yours look like they belong on the photos. That one pixel stroke, then black border show your desert shots in a magestic way. They deserve to be treated special, they are.

Thank you, Kit. I actually had them printed today and the first three are being sent to ICMJ's Prospecting and Mining Journal, as they are having a photo contest. If I get first place I can win a 1oz. Gold Eagle Coin!

Nope, just the picture alone. The border is just for asthetics for forum viewers. I forgot to mention that if any of my pictures wins even as a runner up they'll use it for a cover like they did with last year's photos.
