A Challenge With Matting....

I posted this in my blog, but I thought I'd post it here too for some dicussion.
As some of you may recall I am doing these diptych portraits, and am going have as many of my subjects write on the photograph. I have one of these done right now and I am not sure what I think of the results. With this first one, the text was a whopping 56 words long and took up four lines, which eaqualed about four inches. As you can imagine it is quite a challenge to matte such photograph. See the picture below.
I normally use a bright white matte, but I am wondering if a another color wuld be better, something like black or grey.
Anything anyone has to offer would be great!

How about a double mat with black on the inner at about 1/4", and bright white on the outer? I'd do the black in two panes, one around the words and the other around the picture. I'd probably do the white in one pane (probably not enough space between the pics & words to get both in there).

What are you going to do with them? Exhibit or gift or just for yourself?

These are for exhibition.
It is for my photography group's project.

I my self would use black or a very dark blue mat but r_w suggestion of a double mat makes more sense it will be going on display. But I would not use black as in Chinese Culture is a color of bad luck.

white always looks more formal than dark colors doo. dark colors give it a more artistic look. Personally, the large amount of matboard at the top is distracting. I usually weight my mats only a small amount at the bottom.
